Weld County Commissioners
Dear Commissioners:
i live on WCR 32 about 1/2 mile east of Platteville. I am writing in regards
to the speed of traffic as it passes by my home. I live immediately adjacent to
the Platteville cemetery which is situated right on the crest of an abrupt hill.
There are four blind driveways within a few hundred feet either side of the crest of
the hill. One is at the top of the hill and the other three are on the down side of
the hill. The cemetery extends for about 500 feet east of the crest and the speed
limit is posted as 30MPH at each end of the cemetery with one sign being located
right at the crest. The town of Platteville has put up a 25MPH sign about 500
feet below the crest as you approach town. Between the town speed limit sign
and Highway 85 [ where you must stop to enter the highway ] are 2 railroad
crossings. I routinely witness all manners of vehicles travel westward on WCR 32
at speed well above the posted limits. Heavily loaded trucks and semis fly over
the hill at 50-70 MPH only to slam on their brakes in order to make the stop at
the bottom of the hill. It would almost seem as though the drivers are seeking
the thrill of feeling the road drop out from under them. I have seen this happen
when there is a line of vehicles waiting for the train to clear the crossing
forcing these speeding vehicles to use the oncoming traffic lane to stop because
there is not enough room for them to stop in their own lane. I have frequently
been nearly rear-ended as I enter WCR32 from my 2 driveways by vehicles that
are exceeding the speed limits beyond any measure of common sense. The line at
sight as you crest the hill is extremely poor in both directions. You cannot see
what is on the other side of the hill... period. There are often children, joggers,
livestock and equestrians in the roadway. Additionally people visiting the cemetery
park haphazardly and even on the roadway during burials. Does it seem
acceptable for traffic to zoom by at 60MPH ?
I feel what is needed are signs advising of a reduced speed zone ahead and
also signage concerning the blind drives. I Have requested addition police
presence from the town as the cemetery is town property but they have refused.
Occasionally the State Patrol will spend some time here but it seems to have no
lasting effect. What is needed is a permanent solution that could be provided with
warning signs and addition law enforcement.
I have seen 2 people flown to Greeley on the Flight for Life as well as
several other incidents. I would appreciate your efforts to see what can be done
to correct this situation.
Thank You
Lee Shoemaker
