Re: Traffic Concerns on State Route and WCR 392 from Lucerne to WCR 61
Dear Ms. Schrant:
Please accept my apologies for the delay in replying to your inquiry regarding the traffic volume
and posted speed limit concerns on the referenced roadway. The County is interested in your
inquiry and will immediately pursue an investigation on that portion of the roadway under its
jurisdiction.
As you know, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has control of State Route
392 from Lucerne to WCR 55. CDOT must make decisions on speed limit designations on this
section of the roadway. The County does have jurisdiction of this roadway east of WCR 55.
We intend to take additional traffic counts and review the operating speed of vehicles east of
WCR 55 within the next two weeks. I am informed by the Department of Public Works staff the
speed limit on WCR 392 east of WCR 55 is currently 65 miles per hour.
Regarding a "pull out" for checking truck traffic, the County has a location for this activity on
WCR 392 just north of WCR 74 on the south side of the roadway. CDOT has an open invitation
to utilize this location for truck checks.
If you have further questions regarding these issues, please contact Frank B. Hempen, Jr.,
Director of Public Works at (970)356-4000, Extension 3750.
Very truly yours,

Dear Ms. Kirkmeyer,
In reference to our phone conversation last week I am requ g that your office study the traffic volume
and current speed limit on Highway 392 from county road4 west to the town of Lucerne. My concern
is that the current speed of 65mph is too high for this particular county road and in light of the volume of
truck traffic would be safer at 55mph.
After talking with you, I called the State Patrol to ask for a higher frequency of coverage for this road. I
have already noticed an increase in the number of State Troopers and Weld County Sheriff Deputies.
I contacted Roger Reisig,Department of Transportation, who is in charge of mobile port of entry,as to why
there was not a port of entry on HWY 14 or HWY 392 east of HWY 85. He said that on HWY 392 there
was not enough shoulder room to stop trucks safely. We discussed the fact that his operation needs a paved
pullover in order to do this job. His office will be doing a drive through our area in the next couple of
weeks to reevaluate this situation. Since the county is thinking of repaving HWY 392 to Briggsdale,
perhaps an area could be made to accommodate this matter.
Thank you for your consideration on these matters. Please keep me informed as to the progress on these
matters.
Sincerely yours,
Deborah chrant
