`)re: Western Arterial Corridor
Mr. Refvem: ;LEY
We are writing to you with concerns regarding the possible expansion of 59th and 65th Avenues
in Greeley and Weld County. We are property owners along 65th Avenue and belief that such
expansion will seriously impact the safety of our area. Although your maps suggest that no
accidents occur on this stretch of the road, we can verify at least one fatality at the intersection
of 20th Street and 59th Avenue last year. Several accidents at the curve of 65th Ave. two houses
to the north of our home have happened over the past 15 years. A cement curb had to be
installed at the curve along 59th Ave south of 20th Street to keep cars from ending up in the
backyard of the home in that area. The intersection of 65th Avenue and Bypass 34 also has had
its share of accidents. Numerous "close calls" have happened in front of our own home as we try
to turn left into our driveway. Accidents alone should deter one from considering 59th -65th
for expansion.
Further expansion of 65th Avenue with ensuing increase in traffic flow will only add to the
safety concerns we have for our children. Imagine the difficulty of school buses picking up
children on a major arterial road. Are you also aware of the number of youth activities that
center around the area of 20th Street and 59th Ave.? At present there is a roller skating rink,
Youth Sports Complex (baseball fields), baseball training center, daycare center and gymnastic
center. More traffic in this area would be especially cumbersome to the coming and going of
children and present a risk factor.
We purchased our home in this area because of its country atmosphere. Although we recognize
that growth is inevitable, we believe that a "highway" through the midst of Westridge can and
should be avoided. Not only is the road cumbersome and hazardous with its twisting nature, but
the widening of the road would encroach on the "front doors" of our homes well beyond the 50
foot right of way. Expansion of the road according to your description would extend the road
literally into our garage as well as the doorsteps and yards of our neighbors along this route. We
have all spent years planting and caring for hundreds of trees along 65th Avenue. The beauty of
the area would be destroyed.
We strongly believe that the alternative B route listed on your western arterial corridor study
would be more viable. To date, few residential areas exist on that routing and the route also has
few hazardous curves and provides a more direct route to highway 85. On the contrary,
Alternative D (59th-65th Ave.) includes several dangerous curves which have already been the
site of accidents and passes through developed residential/estate areas thereby impinging on the
safety, life style of children and adults and rural environment of the area. Governor Romer's
recent summit meeting on growth referred to the expansion Greeley, Windsor and Ft. Collins and
the need for greenbelts to separate the cities. Why not use the arterial corridor as one of these
divisions at 83rd where the break between Greeley and Windsor already occurs? Such a road
could address the westward growth of Greeley and meet the needs of Windsor and Ft. Collins as
well. Why disrupt an area when there is an alternative?
If anything, our hope is to redirect traffic away from 59th-65th Avenues, not increase it.
