Dear Ms. Smith:
This letter is in response to your letter dated October 6, 1998, regarding maintenance on Weld County
Road 390. First of all, I apologize for the delay in this response. To investigate this matter, it was
necessary to wait for a detailed traffic study.
a) The borrow ditches on WCR 390 from St. Hwy. 14 to Hereford have had to be deepened at
various locations to allow for proper drainage. The County has no plans to install guard rails
at this time.
b) The width of WCR 390 is 24 feet wide, which is typically considered sufficient for car and truck
traffic. The traffic study on WCR 390 indicated that 22% of the traffic is composed of trucks.
The total count for this segment of roadway ranged from 146 to 197 vehicles per day, which by
policy, is not sufficient to be considered for paving.
c) I realize your concern for the dust created by the traffic; however, the County does not treat for
dust.
d) The road has been graveled, reinforced and geogrid placed in certain locations to eliminate the
problem of the muddy roads.
The segment of road north of Grover will be considered for a possible safety project in the 2001
Construction/Maintenance Projects Program. Candidates for this program will be first reviewed in early
1999.
If you have any other questions, please call Dave Becker, Operations Director, at (970)356-4000 Ext.
3750.
Sincerely,

Dear Weld County Commissioners: CLERK
TO THE BOARD
Attention: George Baxter
I have been going to write this letter for a long time and just have not taken the time to do
it.
I have a major concern about WCR 390 (the angle road from Hereford to Highway 14):
a. The ditches on some of the road are so deep (and keep getting deeper) that guard
rails need to be installed. There is no way to go off the road without rolling the
vehicle. I don't see ordinary ditches on Highway 14 and other roads this deep.
b. Truck traffic keeps increasing and some of the road is hardly wide enough
for a truck and another vehicle to meet.
c. At times the dust is so bad you cannot see in front of you or what is behind
you, especially if you are in between two trucks or meet several in a row.
d. The gravel is gone on most of it again, so when it rains or snows it is hard to
travel safely especially meeting other vehicles.
e. School busses and large equipment safety are another concern.
The bottom line is, when can something be done to the road before someone is seriously
injured or killed? This road has a lot of traffic and a lot of trucks. Please make it one of
your major concerns.
I would like a response to this letter along with any other action we as community
members can make. I travel this road almost every day and in the last two years it has
become dangerous for everyone that travels the road.
Sincerely,
Norma Jean Smith
