The Honorable Tony Grampsas
Chairman, Joint Budget Committee
3237 S Hiwan Drive
Evergreen, CO 80439
Dear Representative Grampsas ,
Referring to the article in the Rocky Mountain News on
July 29 , 1996, "TROOPER NUMBERS DECLINE AS DRIVERS SOAR" ,
you replied, "It will be tough getting additional money
from funds that are largely earmarked for highway con-
struction and maintenance. " In the Rocky Mountain News dated
August 8, 1996 , it states the Department of Transportation
has allocated some $50, 000 to expedite the construction of a
roadway leading into a shopping center.
What is the rationale you and the Department of Transportation
use? It would seem to me that in your opinion, malls are
much more important than funding monies for additional Colo-
rado State Troopers . I think most taxpayers would agree with
me that safety of our roads and streets come before funding of
mall accesses .
As a taxpayer in the State of Colorado, I urge you to re-
evaluate your priorities and give a long, hard look at the
State-wide problem of trooper shortage rather than frivolous
spending such as subsidizing another mall.
Sincerely,
Robert and Myrna Hedglin
