ROAD PRO3LEN AT WEST QUARTER CURPE R nF SEC 12-6-66 - 1 mile West & 11 mile South of Eaton
maybe it was 1994.
In 1995/when County Road 35 was paved, the roadbed was raised about a foot, and the
shoulders were raised with gravel on edges of pavement. The slope of ground is from
West to East. At the west quarter corner of Section 12 (cast quarter corner of Sec 11)
there was a culvert to carry storm and tail water east to discharge into the Graham seep
ditch. The culvert is undersized, espacially when a larger head of water accumulates
during a storm or cloudburst, and so it flows over the paved road 35, and washes the
gravel shoulder on Past side of paved portion nut into the field and also fills °ttoson's
concrete headditch running parallel to the road 35.
On the NW* 12-6-66, owned by me as Trustee, we incurred some crop loss and expense to get
the gravel off the field --much of it had to be done by hand. The gravel accumulation
into the field is the complaint. We don't want to run farm tools through that area of
the field to mix it with the field soils; so it has to be removed. We did it in
1996, and now from the storm first week of June 1997 it is again covered by gravel, but
this time only about 1/2 as much as it was a year ago.
The solution has two parts --one to put a better sized culvert under the road at this spot.
The other is not to use gravel for the east shoulder of the road. Use dirt so it won't
foul up the field if some washes in a cloudburst.
In nutting in a proper sized culvert, we have one bad problem or rather the County has a bad
problem, as it probably would renuire tearing up the road to place the culvert, and may
result in a permanent hump on that high -spend road, which would he a problem forever.
This leaves the substitution of a dirt shoulder rather than a gravel ± nulder as an
immediate, but probably not a full solution to the damage caused by raising the road
level without fully engineering the storm -water run off structures.
Thank you for anything you can do to solve the problem.

rut this loose gravel for the shoulder.
The traffic danger spot is on west side of road where your crews put
in some junk in a hole to trr to fill a bit toward the pavement. This
is a HIGH speed road. Last winter nrl;, 1 person was killed on this
straight road (of course some booze was involved), but people just g" too
fast drnan this road now that it is -paved.
As mentioned nss the mar and notations delivered to you Thursday, the
nab mischief was the soft gravel nut in to raise the shoulder as when

RE: WCR 35 between WCR 70 X WCR 72
Dear Mr. Southard:
After careful consideration of the drainage problems that abut your farm land on WCR 35, Weld County is
going to install a 48 -inch arched pipe culvert. It is our intention to leave the existing drain tiles, culverts, and
the old concrete structures in place.
It will be the farmers responsibility to construct and maintain a new drainage way upstream and downstream
from the new 48 -inch culvert.
Hopefully, this will alleviate most of the gravel run-off. If the weather cooperates, this project is scheduled to
begin within the next ten days.
If you have questions or comments, please don't hesitate to give me a call at (970) 356-4000, EXT. 3750.
Sine rely,
Dave Becker
