HomeMy WebLinkAbout972042.tiffRESOLUTION RE: APPROVE 1997 COMMUNITY FOOD AND NUTRITION APPLICATION AND AUTHORIZE CHAIR TO SIGN WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of Weld County, Colorado, pursuant to Colorado statute and the Weld County Home Rule Charter, is vested with the authority of administering the affairs of Weld County, Colorado, and WHEREAS, the Board has been presented with the 1997 Community Food and Nutrition Application from the County of Weld, State of Colorado, by and through the Board of County Commissioners of Weld County, on behalf of the Department of Social Services, to the State of Colorado, Department of Local Affairs, with terms and conditions being as stated in said application, and WHEREAS, after review, the Board deems it advisable to approve said application, a copy of which is attached hereto and incorporated herein by reference. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of Weld County, Colorado, ex -officio Board of Social Services, that the 1997 Community Food and Nutrition Application between the County of Weld, State of Colorado, by and through the Board of County Commissioners of Weld County, on behalf of the Department of Social Services, and the State of Colorado, Department of Local Affairs be, and hereby is, approved. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the Board that the Chair be, and hereby is, authorized to sign said application. The above and foregoing Resolution was, on motion duly made and seconded, adopted by the following vote on the 22nd day of September, A.D., 1997. Griego, Director WCDSS Federal Objective/s Grant Complies With: x Grant Amount: $2,467.96 Telephone #:(970) 352-1551 ext 620( a: To coordinate existing private and public food assistance resources, whenever such coordination is determined to be inadequate, to better serve low-income communities; b: To assist low-income communities to identify potential sponsors of child nutrition programs and initiate new programs in underserved and unserved areas; and c: To develop innovative approaches at State and local levels to meet the nutrition needs of low-income people. Applicant Program Description: Weld County has utilized the Weld Food Bank, a not -for-profit agency, as the delivery vehicle for the Community Food and Nutrition funds awarded to Weld County, for the past six years. The need for supplemental food has continuedto increase in Weld County. During the past year, referrals to Weld Food Bank increased by 30% overthe previous year. The Supplemental Mini -Box Program has worked quite well for the past several years. This program originated locally as a means of addressing hunger in Weld County. All referrals are made by Weld Information and Referral Services (WIRS) and the Salvation Army, The mission of both agencies is to address homelessness and people at risk of becoming homeless. The mission of Weld Food Bankis to alleviate hunger and reduce food waste, by providing an efficient, centralized system for collecting, storing and distributing food with community support. Funding through the Community Food and Nutrition Program will make it possible to assist 825 people with nutritious food to supplement their diet. The goal of the program will be to continue feeding the hungry and prevent the .waste. of somesporadic large perishable donations.
