Dear Mr. Letterly:
We are in receipt of your letter dated November 20, 1999, concerning the borrow ditches.
Our borrow ditches range from 6 inches to depths necessary to carry sufficient amounts
of storm water to prevent the County roads from flooding. The purpose of the borrow
ditches is to accommodate the storm water run off. The depths vary depending on the
topography of the surrounding area.
The County equipment pulls dirt from the borrow ditches to keep the ditches free flowing.
Any excess material is used in the County as needed or distributed locally for cost
efficiency.
If you have any questions, please call Dave Becker, Operations Director, at(970)356-4000
Ext. 3750.
Sincerely,
BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

Dear County Commissioners,
I feel the barrow pit ditches are hazards to people's health. Some are very deep
and but not that wide. Often they are around 5-8 feet deep. If a car goes off in a place
were they are this deep the passengers can be trapped inside of their own car, the walls of
the ditch will pin the person inside their car. This could be a very serious ordeal. Often
this lengthens the rescue process and may just take to long to save someone in an auto
accident. You often dig the ditches out for farmers so they can use the dirt on there farms.
One way to fix this death trap is to only dig barrow pit to 4 feet deep, that is plenty of
ditch to carry the water on any year. So what if farmers cannot get as much free dirt.
Thank you for listening to my concerns and ways to fix them.
Sincerely,
Seth Letterly
