Dear TCI,
I wanted to express my concern over the recent 14% increase in my montly TCI bill for
basic/expanded cable TV services. The cost of cable TV service is not equating into a
fair value for what I receive. Basic cable service has minimal value without including
(and paying extra for) the expanded service as a part of the package. However, the
expanded service includes many substandard channels that add little or no value for a
high percentage of cable TV customers, yet all customers are required to pay for the
privilege of having those channels available as an option. The recent channels TCI added
to the expanded line-up are of no interest to me, but I am required to pay an additional
14%per month to cover the cost of delivering those channels if I wish to continue to view
my regular channels. I am unaware of any other consumer product or service that can be
forced on the consumer for an additional charge, whether the consumer wants it or not.
Cable TV has been allowed to manipulate the delivery of communication services at the
expense of their customers. A monopolistic system is very evident here.
The lack of local competition for cable TV service forces Greeley residents to use TCI
Cablevision for cable services without having the ability to shop around for competitive
options. I hope the FCC, Weld County and City of Greeley will investigate what appears
to be inappropriait, pricing policies by TCI of Colorado and the cable industry in general.
The cable TV industry is unwilling to police itself and requires constant monitoring by
the national regulators and local government.
