Lupton, CO 80621 Dwayne, I did a little research on a seeding plan for your place and the following are my recommendations. Due to the heavy rye cover, I think that you will need to plow it under and plant a spring -seeded cover crop such as sorghum or sorghum-sudan grass. Soil disturbance should be limited to strips no wider than 100 feet and preferably oriented at right angles to the prevailing winds from the northwest. The rye in the undisturbed strips should be controlled with chemicals or by mowing when the seed reaches the hard dough stage, before the seed is viable. Seeding of the grass should be done in late fall sometime around Nov. 1, so that no germination occurs until spring. The seeding should be done with a drill designed to seed grass, not a grain drill. I have enclosed a list of grass drill operators and seed vendors. The seed recommendation below can be altered somewhat, but it should work pretty well on your site. I usually don't put more than four or five species in a mix, but because these soils are so fragile and susceptible to erosion, I think this gives us a better chance of getting something to grow. Most of the mix consists of warm season grasses, which, if not over -grazed, should produce well over a range of climatic conditions. There is also some Western Wheatgrass and Sideoats Grama. These are cool season grasses and should give you some good grazing in the spring and fall. As far as grazing is concerned, it is always better to rotate with several pastures than allow continuous grazing on one. Cross -fencing into smaller pastures will allow you to control grazing and keep the grass stand viable for a longer time. 951308 Species Western Wheatgrass Sideoats Grama Little Bluestem Switchgrass Yellow Indiangrass Sand Bluestem Blue Grama Variety* % of mix PLS/acre** Arriba Vaughn Pastura Grenville Llano Elida Lovington 10 .80 15 .68 15 .55 25 .63 10 .50 20 1.60 5 .08 * These are the top varieties recommended by us, but others will also work. ** This is the pounds of Pure Live Seed per acre and is based on the germination and purity of a specific lot of seed. I hope this is of some use to you and if you have any other questions, please give me a call. Sincerely, Richard Stephenson Soil Conservation Technician 951398
