The situation to which I am referring is the crossing of U.S. Highway 85 at Weld County Road 32. Weld County Road 32 is used by a number of trucks that have a need to cross U.S. Highway 85 in an east/west direction. The now almost continuous traffic across U.S. Highway 85 makes it very difficult for a slow moving truck starting from a stop sign to cross that highway safely. There is significant traffic at this intersection from Morning Fresh Farms, Hempfield Trucking, Longmont Foods, Beth Holsteins, as well as numerous oil field equipment operators, just to name a few of the major businesses in the area that use large trucks on a daily basis. Although there are a number of miscellaneous trucks that use this intersection every day, we are aware of the following: Longmont Foods, 51 trucks per day Morning Fresh Farms, 45 trucks per day Morning Fresh Farms during corn harvest, 1,000 trucks in six weeks Monfort during 16 week period, during corn harvest, there are 2,400 trucks Rocky Mountain Flour Mill, 4 trucks per day Bella Holsteins, 3 trucks per day at 119 o2/.?/9Y ees«; J 980259 O Colorado Department of Transportation Town of Platteville Weld County Commissioners December 12, 1997 Page 2 I urge you to study this situation, visit with people in this area, and make a determination of whether or not a stop light is justified at this intersection. No one wants an un-needed stop light, but I think you will find that the traffic at this location is creating a very hazardous situation that is unacceptable and dangerous. I would be willing to visit with any of you regarding this important matter. Sincerely, David Farley • 11 BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS PHONE (970) 356-4000, EXT.4200 FAX: (970) 352-0242 P.O. The intersection of Weld County Road (WCR) 32 and U.S. Highway 85 is within the town limits of Platteville; therefore, any requests to the Colorado Department of Transportation for signing or traffic signals on U.S. Highway 85 must be generated from the Town. The appropriate person to contact at the Colorado Department of Transportation is Jeff Kullman, Region 4 Traffic Engineer, P.O. Box 850, Greeley, Colorado, 80632. Mr. Kullman has indicated to Mr. Scheltinga that the intersection met peak hour traffic volume requirements for a traffic signal. At this time, the intersection ranked in approximately 15th place for signals in Region 4, and it is unlikely to be funded in the immediate future. Mr. Kullman indicated he would contact you. If you have further questions, please contact Drew Scheltinga, County Engineer, at (970)356- 4000 Ext. 3750. Sincerely, BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS el) ti. mac` yLt2.fit,r 2 /`..u`..= Constance L.
