After the recent fatal accident at the intersection of 83rd Avenue and 20th Street, the Weld County Public Works
Department evaluated the warrants for a four-way stop in accordance with the Manual for Uniform Traffic Control
Devices. The warrants appropriate for consideration in this case are the number of accidents and the amount of
traffic entering the intersection. The same procedure was followed after a fatal accident at the same intersection
approximately one year ago. At that time, the warrants for a four-way stop were not met.
The amount of traffic entering the intersection still does meet the four-way stop warrants. However, after
researching the records, the Colorado Highway Patrol reported five accidents between February 6, 1997, and
November 3, 1997. That accident history does meet the four-way stop warrants.
On November 24, 1997, the Board of Weld County Commissioners passed a resolution approving installation of
a four-way stop at 83rd Avenue and 20th Street. The traffic control devices have been installed.
Simply installing additional signs is not the solution to the traffic safety. Drivers must act responsibly and obey
traffic control devices.
Sincerely,
BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
