Dear Ms. Pyeatt:
Thank you for your recent letter to the Board of County Commissioners. We always appreciate
the opportunity to learn the concerns of Weld County citizens.
As Colorado contint.es to grow, Weld County is being faced with growth issues never before
seen. One of the major obstacles is the balance between growth and personal property rights.
This task is further complicated by land use agreements that were previously approved by
former boards of commissioners. As a board of elected officials, we are generally obligated to
honor such agreements.
In order to be fair and just, the Board of County Commissioners does not take its responsibilities
lightly. We do consider what is right and what makes sense; however, we are also bound to
follow the rules and laws established. It is often difficult, but we strive to balance legal
obligations with common sense. It is not the role of the Board of County Commissioners to
impede growth or limit personal property rights. It is our obligation to consistently and.
equitably enforce the established rules and goals of the county. Further, it is also our role to
listen to Weld County citizens and to change these rules and regulations should they not meet
the sentiments of the county.
While it is not appropriate to comment on land use cases presently in process of review, we do
encourage you to express any specific concerns you have during the land use hearing or by mail
to either the Planning Department at 1555 N. 17th Avenue, Greeley, Colorado, 80631, or
directly to the Board of County Commissioners at P. O. Box 758, Greeley, Colorado. 80631.
Thank you for your comments, and we look forward to hearing from you on specific land use
cases.
Sincerely,
BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

Dear Commissioners,
On August 17th I attended the meeting of the Planning and Zoning Committee and left
that meeting in shock. There was an application before Planning and Zoning to change the
zone of a parcel of land in southwestern Weld County.
I understand that the Planning Committee's charge is to make sure all requirements are
met before forwarding individual projects on to the Commissioners for approval or denial.
Legally developers can jump through all of the necessary hoops and the county planners
make sure they do. But I wonder just who the planners work for....do they work for the
developers or the best interest of the county?
I visited with the Planning office recently about a concern I have near my home. Of
course, everyone was very helpful in retrieving the plans, plats, etc., but when I spoke to
her about my concerns, her response was that she understood, there wasn't much I could
do to stop what was concerning me, and that since nothing can stop it, "you'll get used to
it." A very patronizing statement, and not exactly what I wanted to hear!
Please, as you go about your task of reviewing growth issues in Weld County, look
beyond what the legal aspects are and toward what is right, what makes sense, and what
impact it will have on all of us. Don't give developers a blanket approval. On Tuesday
only one of the P&Z members had what it takes to stand up against growth. Can you do
the same?
Sincerely,
Linda Pyeatt
