Canada Thistle and Bindweed are spreading
onto our good irrigated farms at an
alarming rate.

How Much of Your Profits Is He Stealing?
This is a hard question to answer but
let us assume that the potential average
gross income on a good irrigated farm is
$100 per acre. On a quarter section with
140 acres of measured crop land in alfalfa,
corn, sugar beets and barley, that would
equal $14,000. If you have Canada Thistle
or Bindweed on your farm in small or large
patches or scattered plants, they then are
using up plant food and water and occupying
space that otherwise would go into the
production of valuable crops. If they cut
your production by only 1%, it is costing
you $140 per year in potential income.
Increase it to 5% and it will cost you $700
spraying or treating plus the inconvenience
reduced market value of your land --the figure
per year. Add

In this county we have a few farms where Canada Thistle and Bindweed are very
serious and it is estimated that production has been cut severely. The sale
value of the land has been reduced also.
What is the answer?
Many leading farmers in your area have been consulted. They say
we must get an organized Concentrated control program going fast. A
"District Noxious Weed Control Steering Committee" has been appointed.
This committee has given this problem a lot of study and thought and
has come up with a plan. Details of that p,an wiles follow in the next
letters. Watch for them.
