Dear Barbara:
As I indicated when I spoke with you on the phone, the South Platte Valley Historical Society is
submitting a Great Outdoors Colorado Planning Grant application, due February 2. We would
appreciate the Weld County Commissioners writing a letter of support for that application.
The Society has accumulated about 100 acres of land, including the site of the original adobe Fort
Lupton, built in 1836. Archaeology work has mainly served to prove that the site was mostly de-
stroyed when the Ewing farmstead was razed by the company which built oil well rigs there. The
remaining 40 feet of adobe wall was dug up and hauled into town in 1981. However, from de-
scriptions of the fort and the archaeology that has been done, we still intend to rebuild the fort and
operate it as a living history museum.
The land in the floodplain and the island to the south of County Road 14-1/2 need careful plan-
ning for preservation, development, and controlled use. The land above the floodplain is planned
to contain the fort, a historic farmstead, 1875 schoolhouse, some artisan cottages, and a visitor
center, and will likewise require extensive planning. Planning will require coordination with sev-
eral entities: the City of Fort Lupton, the school district, Aims Community College, the Corps of
Engineers, Soil Conservation Service, the County Extension Service, and others to be identified.
Since the project will be so costly, phased development will need to be planned, costs estimated,
and sources of funding identified.

We believe the completed project will be of considerable significance to Fort Lupton and Weld
County, recreationally, educationally, and a site to attract tourism. As a matter of fact, the living
history Rendezvous held each year in connection with Fort Lupton's Trapper's Days celebration is
attracting more visitors each year.
Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,

Dear Mr. Shafroth:
The Board of Weld County Commissioners is writing this letter in support of the South Platte Valley
Historical Society's application for a Great Outdoors Colorado Planning Grant.
The Society has accumulated about 100 acres of land, including the site of the original adobe Fort
Lupton, built in 1836. Archaeological work has mainly served to prove the site was mostly
destroyed when the Ewing farmstead was razed by the company which built oil well rigs there. The
remaining 40 feet of adobe wall was dug up and hauled into town in 1981. However, from
descriptions of the fort and the archaeological study that has been done, the Society still intends
to rebuild the fort and operate it as a living history museum.
The land in the floodplain and the island to the south of Weld County Road 14% need careful
planning for preservation, development, and controlled use. The land above the floodplain is
planned to contain the fort, a historic farmstead, 1875 schoolhouse, some artisan cottages, and
a visitor center, and will likewise require extensive planning. Planning will require coordination with
several entities: the City of Fort Lupton the school district, Aims Community College, the Corps of
Engineers, Soil Conservation Service, the Weld County Extension Service, an others to be
identified. Since the project will be so costly, phased development will need to be planned, costs
estimated, and sources of funding identified.

County, recreationally, educationally, and as a tourist attraction. As a matter of fact, the living
