I would like to address what is, at best, the unethical and perhaps illegal billing practices of the Weld
County Ambulance Service. On the early evening of November 11, 1997 I called police dispatch to report,
that due to extremely slick streets, my vehicle had ended up in a ditch. I called from the ditch using my
own cell phone. The dispatcher was advised that I was the only occupant and that I did not require medical
assistance. Shortly after the GPD officers arrived a WCPS unit also arrived. The GPD officer suggested
that since the ambulance was already here I should let them check me. After a brief exam and vitals taken I
signed a standard release. Two weeks later a bill for $70.00 arrived.
After speaking with the Ambulance director and not getting this bill dismissed, I am writing you. Even
though police tapes show the first report of the accident was that that injuries were unknown, my
subsequent call seconds later did advise "no injuries". The ambulance WAS NOT CANCALLED. Never
during their time on scene was I advised that there were charges for service. I SIGNED NOTHING saying
I was aware or responsible for charges.
I believe under Colorado law this type of billing is not valid. Had I been advised of, or signed a contract
indicating my awareness of these charges; I would pay this bill. As neither occurred, I refuse to pay.
All that is required to correct these poor accounting practices is to 1) advise potential customers that a fee
is being charged for their exam and elicit permission from them. 2) clearly state on the release the type,
reason for, and amount of charges, and that they are informed of them before obtaining their signature.
