COLORADO October 7, 1998 Robert Wardlaw 27712 WCR 62 Greeley, CO 80631 Concerned Citizens on WCR 62 between WCR 57 and Colorado State Highway 37 Dear Mr. Wardlaw and Citizens: This letter is in response to your concern regarding the condition of WCR 62 between WCR 57 and Colorado State Highway 37. The Public Works Department is aware of the problems with this road and is planning to improve conditions on this segment of roadway. A traffic count was taken recently, which shows an average daily traffic of approximately 150 vehicles. The Department plans to work on this roadway starting this fall. The intended work includes adding a cohesive binder to the subgrade and regravel the road with crushed rock. We believe this procedure will improve the condition of the roadway for the traveling public. If you have further questions, please call Frank B. Hempen, Jr. or Dave Becker at (970)356-4000, Ext. 3750. Sincerely, BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS Z i / Constance L. Harbert, Chair cc: Frank B. The stretch of Road 62 in front of my house is one of the roughest roads in Weld County and has been for a number of years. I have lived on Road 62 since 1972 and it has been rough for that long. Ask Scott Schreiber who at one time maintained this road. We now have all the oil field traffic for the oil wells on the Witwer and Wells ranches, plus others along WCR 62 and there are six new homes that use this road daily. This road is used by ten farms as a farm-to-market road, plus my feedlot and a 300 cow dairy. The road is graded weekly and the grader man spent two hours giving the road special attention three weeks ago and in two days, it was as bad as ever. We have no complaint about the grader man but this road needs more than grading as we have found out. There are a lot of local cars and trucks servicing the farms, dairy, feedlots and homes that are paying fuel tax on the road, not counting the oil field trucks that service the many wells in the dry lands. The county did a lot work on WCR 601/2, a 1/2 mile south of WCR 62, that runs two miles to a dead end. Due to the conditions of my Feedlot Permit, I can't use WCR 60 1/2 for my feedlot. My farm lays between Roads 62 and 60 1/2.. I hope that you don't think that I am unreasonable, but if any of you would like to come out and drive this road in your cars or ride with me in the truck that I am shaking to pieces daily, you don't even need to make an appointment. Enclosed are letters from people who drive this road trying to make a living the same as I am. Box 576 Windsor, CO 80550 September 21, 1998 To Whom It May Concern: This letter is in regard to Weld County Road(WCR) 62 between Hwy 37 and WCR 57. Two hours after grading this road it so rough due to the "washboards", that it is difficult to keep my pickup between the road ditches. Not only is this mad very dangerous to drive on, it also is destructive to the vehicles using it. I have lived in this area fifteen years and this road has never improved. There must be something that can be done to improve this road. Sine ly your?, L„,iLi E. Steel, D.V.M. r S,;..7j- i 9/15/98 Weld County Road Commission 915 10th St Greeley, Colorado 80631 Genelemen: I work for Bob Wardlaw, feeding cattle. I travel road 62, east of Hwy 37, about 15 to 20 times a day. It is so washboardy that it is shaking the trucks to pieces . We had to fix a radiator because the bottom fell out . I pass cars traveling about 10 mph, trying to drive this road without shaking their cars to pieces . People pull their cars over and stop, when I meet them, because it is so dusty. The dust must be terrible for the homes along this road. The road grader man tries his best to keep it up, but to no avail . As a taxpayer, I feel something should be done with this road. Sit}ce,rely 11 RaymEid Lohr Page 1 (it -106-1( September 14, 1998 Weld County Road Commission 915 10th Street Greeley, CO 80631 Gentlemen: I have frequent occasion to use road 62 east of Hwy. 37 doing business with Wardlaw Farms, hauling cattle. This road is in terrible disrepair and is extremely hard on vehicles do to the washboards. I have on occasion been behind the roadgrater and found very little difference. It is obvious to me that in spite of a sincere attempt by the grater operator to improve the surface of the road he is met with an impassible situation. It appears to me that a hard surface would eliminate the need for constant grating which obviously is a waste of time and fuel. As a taxpayer, it seems a wise investment to resurface this road and eliminate the need to continue the cost with no obvious results. I also would suggest a survey by your department to justify the need for these measures. We have lived at this address for twelve years and have noticed the continual deterioration of County Road 62 from not only the normal residence traffic, the U. S. Mail, and farm equipment, but the continual use by the various oil vehicles that travel on this road. We have noticed the road grader grading the road more and more but it doesn't seem to help much. More and more new homes are being built either right on Road 62 or just off the road on County Roads 57 and 59, consequently, more and more vehicles are using the road. It would seem that continual grading will not help unless more permanent work is done, similar to what was done on County Road 60 1/2. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. I have lived at this address for almost 27 years. The dirt road the passes our home, from Highway 37 extending east, is the roughest dirt road in the county. We have friends who actually refuse to come to our home because they drive expensive cars that they do not want to take down that stretch of road. I have seen the school bus slide right past our house because the tires couldn't get enough grip on the washboard road to stop. I have seen cars slide through the stop sign because the drivers are apparently concentrating on finding the smoothest path, watching the immediate road rather than where they should be watching. I have shaken apart every vehicle I have owned, once to the point that the windshield fell out of the car. As I stand at my kitchen window and watch the traffic on this stretch of road, I can see the various methods the drivers use to cope with this problem. Some try driving extremely slow, some try driving fast enough to stay on the top of the washboards. I see some drive on the opposite side of the road and I see some try to cling to the edge of the road where there is less traffic and the ruts are not as deep. Everyone using this road, and it is used quite heavily, has to find some way to deal with the bone jarring ruts. The road maintainer comes by every few days, but if he grades the road in the morning, the washboards are back before evening. If the road department can so greatly improve that little strip of road south of us on Weld County Road 60%, surely something can be done to improve this evil strip of dirt road on 62.
