RE: APPROVE 1998 APPLICATION FOR COMMUNITY FOOD AND NUTRITION
PROGRAM AND AUTHORIZE CHAIR TO SIGN
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of Weld County, Colorado, pursuant to
Colorado statute and the Weld County Home Rule Charter, is vested with the authority of
administering the affairs of Weld County, Colorado, and
WHEREAS, the Board has been presented with the 1998 Application for Community
Food and Nutrition Program from the County of Weld, State of Colorado, by and through the
Board of County Commissioners of Weld County, on behalf of the Weld County Housing
Authority, to the Colorado Department of Local Affairs, with terms and conditions being as stated
in said application, and
WHEREAS, after review, the Board deems it advisable to approve said application, a
copy of which is attached hereto and incorporated herein by reference.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of Weld
County, Colorado, ex-officio Housing Authority Board, that the 1998 Application for Community
Food and Nutrition Program between the County of Weld, State of Colorado, by and through the
Board of County Commissioners of Weld County, on behalf of the Weld County Housing
Authority, and the Colorado Department of Local Affairs be, and hereby is, approved.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the Board that the Chair be, and hereby is, authorized
to sign said application.
The above and foregoing Resolution was, on motion duly made and seconded, adopted
by the following vote on the 26th day of October, A.D., 1998.

RE: Community Food and Nutrition Application for 1998
The State Department of Local Affairs has invited Weld County to submit an application for
awarded funds through the Community Food &Nutrition Program. The amount available
through the Community Food and Nutrition program this year is $2,468.04. Once a contract has
been received from the State Department of Local Affairs, funds will be contracted to the Weld
Food Bank for implementation of the program.
Staff is recommending approval of the Community Food&Nutrition Program application for
1998.

Federal Objective/s Grant Complies With:
a: To coordinate existing private and public food assistance resources,
whenever such coordination is determined to be inadequate,to better
serve low-income communities;
b: To assist low-income communities to identify potential sponsors of
child nutrition programs and initiate new programs in underserved and
unserved areas; and
c: To develop innovative approaches at State and local levels to meet
the nutrition needs of low-income people.
Applicant Program Description:
Weld County has utilized the Weld Food Bank,a not-for-profit agency,as the delivery vehicle for the Community
Food and Nutrition funds awarded to Weld County,for the past six years.
The Weld Food Bank is seeing an increase in food needs and also an increase in the number of people who have
transportation restrictions in accessing the help that is available. Weld Food Bank continues to research ways to offer
services to more people,provide higher quality and a variety of food,addressing the transportation restrictions many
face.Key organizations will include:Weld Information and Referral Service(WIRS) Retired Senior Volunteer
Program(RSVP)Area Agency on Aging(AAA),Fort Lupton Housing Authority,Connections for Independent
Living and agencies and programs of the Weld Food Bank
The mission of Weld Food Bank is to alleviate hunger and reduce food waste,by providing an efficient,centralized
system for collecting,storing and distributing food with community support A method will be developed to continue
to serve low income persons at risk of becoming homeless with a food program.The food made available to qualifies
recipients will be of high nutritional value. Food is acquired through the Second Harvest National Food Bank
Network,from local grocery stores and from USDA
Funding through the Community Food and Nutrition Program will make it possible to assist 825 people with
nutritious food to supplement their diet.
The goal of the program will be to continue feeding the hungry and prevent waste of some sporadic large perishable
