Dear County Commissioners :
Invasive weeds have become a major economic and environmental
problem in the Western states, and the expansion of noxious
weeds in Colorado is increasing at an alarming rate .
Cooperative efforts by all landowners, whether private or
public, will be needed to manage growing invasion of our
lands .
With the passage of HB-96-1008 in the 1996 legislature the
Colorado state noxious weed list is to be developed from a
list submitted by state' s weed districts . To that end, please
complete the enclosed survey and return it, by October 1 .
1996 .
After the results of the survey are compiled and the top ten
noxious weeds are prioritized, public hearings will be held to
establish the State noxious weed list by rule .
• In addition, the department will be requesting funding from
the legislature in 1997 for the State Noxious Weed Fund to be
used as matching grants and start up assistance to facilitate
cooperative efforts in weed management by counties, cities,
state, federal government and the private sector. Please
express your thoughts and ideas concerning state funding of
. coordinated noxious weed management to your legislative
representatives .
If you have any questions about the survey or the fund, please
contact John Gerhardt at (303 ) 239-4140 .
Sincerely,
A
