Ms. Barbara Kirkmeyer
Weld County Commissioner
P.O. Box 758
Greeley, CO 80632
Dear Ms. Kirkmeyer,
Attached please find Map outlining location for new waste water plant that is currently in the
planning process for the City of Erie. The Erie community newsletters indicate 3,000 to 4,000
homes will be built over the next five years. The majority of these home are to be built in
Boulder county. Per city officials, this plant is to be constructed within the next 2 - 3 years. The
sight is adjacent to a group of homes in rural Weld County, outside of the city limits.
Naturally the residents of this area are very concerned. We are all on well water and have
concerns about what this will do to ground water tables. Water tables are very high in this area.
It also located on the flood plain. And we are very concerned about overall air quality as well as
the aesthetic impact this would have on the immediate environment and neighborhood.
In speaking with county officials, they know nothing of Erie's plans to build this waste water
treatment plant. It seems the city is telling county officials that they will continue to expand
upon and upgrade the current facility. Yet the current facility is close to being at maximum use.
At city planning meetings, officials talk openly of the new plant to be built, yet when pressed
by citizens, the city officials clam up and are not willing to expand on plans and what will be
done to ensure environmental -safety and protection for both the existing pant as well as the new
proposed plant.
Perhaps you cannot react or challenge the city at this point regarding the new proposed plant, but
it would be reassuring if you were to verify that the existing plant is within state and county
guidelines and that plans for any new facility would also meet current state and local guidelines.
Also, as the majority of the new homes are to be built in Boulder County, why have the waste go
to Weld County?
I am sure this will become an issue in the coming months. Hopefully, you will be able to address
our concerns when this comes about. We will be forming a community group to attempt to block
construction of this facility. We look forward to meeting you at that time.
Sincerely,
CONCERNED CITIZENS OF WESTVIEW ESTATES
