Dear Mayor Nelson:
Greeley and Weld County's request to add U. S . 85 from Greeley
to the Wyoming state line to the National Highway System (NHS) was
submitted to FHWA in September. We were recently notified by them
that they did not support the request because this route
essentially provides travel service that parallels I-25 . The
section of U. S . 85 from the Colorado state line to Cheyenne,
Wyoming was proposed by Wyoming in 1993 as a part of the NHS but
not approved by FHWA. The FHWA also informed us that they were
presently developing guidance for revising the NHS and asked us to
withhold requesting revisions until the guidance is developed. We
will provide you with a copy of this guidance when FHWA has
finalized it .
