About Bill Kipp
The blue-eyed.cowboy came to town back in the twenties he
was born on the east side of Keenesburg. lie was named alter
an old buddy of his dads...William Fredrick Cody. I think he
• tried to live up to the name and the fame of that oue.
He is retiring from a: thankless job, trying to keep
thousands of people happy. Up and down the road each day,
and when he stopped he always had something to say. A
person lives for the day when he can say - Take this job,and
SHOVE 1T.
' Bill was raised north of Keenesburg with the jack rabbit's
and rattle snakes. Ile said things I were bad in the dirty
thirties. His dad would get the kids out and show them a
rabbit track in the morning and he would say...Breakfast is
on the other end. They ate so many rabbit's that they were
scared of their own dogs. f
Bill worked on the farm' and. for Herb Pentilon's Cement
Company. One day a fellow had this old turkey gobbler that
just kept coming up to Bill and attacking him when he was
•
muting cement. One day Bill grabbed this turkey and threw
him in the mixer, damned near killed lint,, the turkey. Ile
lived but never to fight again,took the fight right out of him.
Then the Navy got him and they soon knew they had drawn
a bucking horse. They tried to tame him but didn't succeed.
They put him on a L.S.T. IThat is a small ship that hauls
trucks and faults on, or in the bottom./They let Bill drive the
darn ship one night and he turned it around. lie thought he
would bring it home but the Colorado River was iust ton
shallow.
I think in Korea he hauled the tank outfit that Kett Shaklee
was in. There is no doubt in my mind that the Navy is a
better place after having Wild Bill Kipp In it.
Alter leaving the Navy Bill spent a little time up on the
Grovant near Jackson Hole, Wyoming. He herded a few cows
and hauled a little hay for about ten years.
One morning they drove their sled out to get hay and a
moose was eating on the hay pile. Bill just pulled his trusty
44 and killed the moose. They loaded it up on the sled and
, piled three hay bales on top of the moose. This morning here
came the game warden in his snow sled and thev_visited unite
a while and the Warden got ready to go he said to Bill, "hurry
up and get that sled to the house before it BLEEDS TO
DEATH."
One night Bill and a buddy decided to go tobogganing down
the Jackson ski slope but they did not have a sled. They
visited the Silver Dollar Saloon and got a good idea. They got
a scoop shovel and got up on the lull and mounted the shovel
and carne down the mountain. They came down alright but
I their next visit was ; the hospital. Bill did heal up to ride
again, but a smarter luau.
Then came the years with the roadgrader. Ile hung up his
chaps and saddle and his spurs have layed rusted. Ile did not
need them to stay in a roadgrader. Roads are just to smooth
for that. 11Iany mornings in the winter he was out grading the
suow off the roads before it got light. Ile had graded
everything, snow, pot holes, weeds, rocks and a little blue
sky.
No mau can run a grader like William Fredrick Kipp, if
you don't believe me, just ask him. Ile used to run his horse
so fast he cut a hole in the wind. That is some of the reason
that Colorado had so much wind that year.
Well anyway Bill have good luck in whatever you do.
