Kirby, Commissioner William H. Webster, Commissioner Weld County/Board of County Commissioners Centennial Center 915 10th Street Greeley, CO 80631 Dear Commissioners: I have just read a report by Golder Associates concerning pollution by Central Weld Landfill. After reading this report one would come to several conclusions: 1. Very little pollution escapes from the landfill. 2 . Ground water travels very slowly. 3. The trench along the north side of the landfill diverts the ground water away from the landfill. The Spomer Lakes are southwest of the landfill. They have been polluted by the landfill. You can see it and you can smell it! I live about 1500 feet south of the landfill. Every summer about 4 to 6 weeks after farmers north of me start irrigating, a spring breaks out 250 feet southeast of my house. This spring flows until late fall or winter. The lag time of 4 to 6 weeks between the start of irrigation and the outbreak of this spring shows that ground water travels much faster than the Golder Associates' report would lead you to believe. Golder Associates has supposedly determined that VOC's have not traveled very far off-site. Heavy metals have been detected off-site by neighboring landowners through private labs. I don't believe, Golder, the County or the State has ever tested my spring, my well or the Big Thompson for heavy metals, VOC's, or radioactivity. By the landfill's own admission in a General Permit Applica- tion dated 9-28-92, the landfill gives the Big Thompson as the ultimate stream for run off from the landfill (not to mention it goes through my irrigable land and pasture to get there: ) . / it I .;A '✓ 921286 P037 2 It is rumored, the landfill is proposing that a slurry wall will hold the contamination in the confines of the landfill. I leave that to your imagination! In conclusion, why not spend the $10,000, 000 or so it would take to build a slurry wall and clean up, ON AND OFF SITE? Let's put Central Weld Landfill behind us!
