RE: Request For Design Flexibility
Denver Regional Landfill (South)
Weld County
Dear Mr. Hoffman:
The Hazardous Materials and Waste Management Division of the Colorado Departrient •
of Health (the Division) is in receipt of your letter dated February 8, 1994, requesting dsign,
flexibility for the leachate collection piping, up-slope riser piping, one inch thick HDPEipad
in the sump and geotextile cushion for the Denver Regional Landfill (South) located in
Weld County.
The Division has the following comments regarding your request for design flexibility:
Leachate Collection Piping and Up-Slope Piping
Please provide the manufacture's specifications on the proposed corrugated HDPE
piping which demonstrates that the piping is developed for solid waste landfills and
is compatible with the leachate generated at these facilities. This information needs
to be placed into the Division's files.
One Inch Thick HDPE Pad in Sump
Provide calculations which demonstrate the HDPE pad is no longer necessary to
protect the HDPE liner when utilizing the corrugated HDPE piping.
Geotextile Cushion
Provide a copy of the grain size distribution of the material which was utilized for the
load test. Please provide publications which detail procedures for geomembrane load
tests which represent the test you performed. Please demonstrate that performance
of the load test for a 24-hour period at 30 percent greater then the maximum design
load, represents the maximum degradation of the HDPE geomembrane liner which
will occur over the life of this facility.

In summary, the Division approves the use of corrugated piping. However, the additional
information requested above is needed to evaluate the elimination of the one inch thick
HDPE pad and the geotextile cushion.
