WHATEVER HAPPENED TO. . .
THE HISTORIC BRIDGES?
Two spans of the historic State Bridge, originally
located near Del Norte in Rio Grande County, have been relocated
by two new owners . A 45-foot pony truss span has been moved by
David Gundling to a Stollstiemer Creek crossing at Aspen Springs ,
Colorado, where it will provide access to a residential area. The
125-foot through truss span has been moved by Rob Bement and will
be placed over a canyon near Mancos . He plans to enclose the
structure in glass and convert it to his private residence. This
is the first bridge relocated as a result of the Department ' s
mitigation efforts for historic bridges which would otherwise be
demolished.

The Department is continuing to seek individuals or
organizations interested in relocating and reusing historic bridges
scheduled for replacement . Currently, the Four Mile Bridge, which
crosses the Arkansas River near Buena Vista, is available for
relocation. The 1909 bridge is a 50-foot long riveted steel siderail
truss with a 12-foot roadway width.
It is recommended that the structure be rehabilitated for a use
other than vehicular traffic. The relocation cost, assuming that it is
relocated within a 200-mile area, is estimated between $35, 160 and
$40, 920 (these figures include abutments and some restoration of the
structure) . In order to help defray the relocation cost, a grant of
$1, 200 will be made available to the bridge recipient after the structure
is moved.
For information regarding the requirements for relocation,
rehabilitation and maintenance, interested parties should contact Staff
Historians Vicki Rottman or Rebecca Herbst at the Colorado Department of
Highways, 4201 East Arkansas Avenue, Room 212, Denver , Colorado 80222,
(303) 757-9787 . Proposals will be accepted until December 23 , 1985 and
offers reviewed for a thirty day period thereafter .

DECEMBER ROAD OPENINGS
WILL BENEFIT DENVER
During December , a month for giving and receiving, Denver area
motorists may enjoy four separate road openings .
Two of them restore lanes which have been out of service because
of accidents . One is the first Interstate segment opened near Denver
since 1976 . One offers nearly half of a 26-mile four-lane parkway across
the city' s southern edge. Subject to weather conditions and the
last-minute details that construction projects need to accomplish, the
Colorado Department of Highways offers the following dates .
On December 1, Interstate 25 should be restored to eight travel
lanes near the site of the Walnut Street Viaduct ramp construction
accident of October 3 . The Valley Highway, dubbed "The Narrows" near the
accident location by Denver ' s radio station traffic reporters, was
reduced to six lanes.
On Monday , DECEMBER 2, the Department intends to reopen U. S. 36
(Denver-Boulder "Turnpike" ) at the accident site near 108th Ave. tin
Broomfield. Twin bridges, virtually melted by a Burlington Northern
train wreck last August 2 , are replaced by a single deck four-lane bridge.
