SIGNS
N A T I O N A L FOR
COLORADO
HISTORIC
DISTRICT
For decades the Colorado Department of Highways has coordinated with other
agencies to post brown and white "Point of Interest" signs along state highways.
In recent months the highway agency has developed new National Historic District
signs in conjunction with the Colorado Historical Society.
The signs, about 4 ft. square, show a white logo and letters on a brown
background. Twelve of the signs have been erected or will soon be put up, each
with a smaller, rectangular location sign below the large one. Examples: Idaho
Springs, Cripple Creek, Victor, Leadville, or Telluride.
To qualify for signing, districts must be registered as historic districts
in the National Register of Historic Places or on the National Register of
Landmarks. The Colorado Historical Society provided two lists and the Colorado
Department of Highways (using maintenance funds) provided or will provide signs
for twelve locations which are accessible, well-known and popular to the motoring
public.
The Colorado Historical Society logo on the sign depicts a Franciscan monk
or priest (Spanish explorations) , a Native American, and an early settler of
Colorado.

State highways on the map are color coded to indicate bicycling
suitability. The map shows locations of campgrounds, medical facilities,
and bicycle shops. It also shows communities or locations where restaurants
or grocery stores are not available along the route; highways where bicycle
use is prohibited; and paved shoulder width. The reverse side of the
map discusses fickle Colorado weather, camping tips, and bicycle rules of
the road along with other useful bicycle touring information.
The map is a companion to the Interstate Corridor Bicycle Route Map
which suggests routes on or near Colorado's Interstate highway system.
Included are route descriptions through major cities.
The two map set is available prepaid at a cost of $2.00 from the
Colorado Department of Highways, Map Sales (Room 117) , 4201 East Arkansas Ave. ,
Denver, CO 80222. Checks should be made out to "Colorado Department of Highways."
