I 70-1 (53) I-70 BEAVERTAIL TUNNELS, DE BEQUE CANYON
The Department's Division of Highways accepted 13 bids at the Feb. 14 open-
ing for a project to build Interstate 70 tunnels through the Beavertail area in
DeBeque Canyon, 23 miles east of Grand Junction. A joint venture of Morrison-
Knudsen Company, Inc. and Mergentime Corporation, Boise, Idaho submitted an apparently
successful bid of $9,877,320 on the project.
The project also includes grading, structures, stabilization, seeding,
asphalt paving, guard rail, lighting, signing and striping. The project, 1.2 miles
long, requires completion within 390 working days following the Notice to Proceed.
Resident engineer is W. R. Nelson of Grand Junction..
Each of the firms was specially prequalified for this project. The pre-
qualification process demanded the same kind of experience and bonding ability
asked for before Glenwood Canyon's Hanging Lake pilot bore project was advertised
for bids.
