RELEASE AT WILL
BRMU 0033 (2) WALNUT ST. VIADUCT, DENVER
(LARIMER VIADUCT REPLACEMENT)
Five firms turned in offers at the Department of Highways headquarters
May 9 when the Division of Highways opened bids for the Larimer Viaduct re-
placement project in Denver. This contract and a subsequent Phase B will provide
a Walnut St. Viaduct connection to the new West Colfax Viaduct which opened
to traffic August 7, 1984.
Martin K. Eby Construction Company of Englewood submitted an apparently
successful bid of $5,659,738 on the project, which requires completion within
230 working days after its Notice to Proceed. The contractor bid a construction
alternate for concrete, rather than steel.
The project, modified and shortened after its initial advertisement in
February, is on S.H. 33. It begins a tenth of a mile south of the Interstate 25,
13th Avenue junction and extends half a mile northeasterly. This project will
provide ramp connections over the Valley Highway (I-25) . Included are grading,
structures, bridges, hot bituminous paving, signing, striping, lighting, and
landscape elements (topsoil, seeding and mulching) .
The Division of Highways revised the project advertisement May 1, after
reconsidering the scope of work. A shorter viaduct and different access to it
will be needed because Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad officials announced
that the company will abandon tracks near the highway construction area in
October 1986.
The main viaduct structure will extend from near 7th Street, generally
along Walnut St. , to a Colfax Viaduct connection above Bryant St. west of I-25.
A Phase B project which the Division of Highways intends to advertise in July
will call for 1) construction of the main westbound Walnut St. Viaduct trunk; 2)
traffic signals in the Auraria Higher Education Center campus; and 3) removal
of the old Larimer St. Viaduct.
Resident engineer Joe Seitz, who coordinated the West Colfax Viaduct
replacement, will also coordinate this two stage viaduct construction. The
Lawrence St. Viaduct will be razed by still another future project, and the
Walnut St. Viaduct will eventually serve six-lane, two way traffic.
