Qp p` Highway'V ws 31Q April 18, t-1138L5 RELEASE AT WILL ONE-LANE OPERATIONS IN GLENWOOD CANYON Beginning Monday, April 22, motorists traveling U.S. 6 in Glenwood Canyon on weekdays will encounter a four mile segment of one lane highway. Pilot cars will guide motorists alternately eastbound or westbound, between a point just west of Grizzly Creek and a point just below the dam at the Shoshone power plant. The pilot car operation, scheduled to last all summer, should benefit the traveling public and contractors. Motorists, once delayed, will have con- tinuous trips through the construction zone rather than trips interrupted by one or more of three separate construction projects. The Interstate 70 construction work, meanwhile, should progress faster with only one traffic lane open. Pilot cars with flashing amber lights will operate between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. 0 0 0 PROTECTING BRIDGE DECKS WITH ELECTRICAL CURRENT Engineers and contractors interested in bridge deck protection are invited to a June 4 "Cathodic Protection Open House" sponsored by the Colorado Department of Highways and the Federal Highway Administration. A program of information will offer morning sessions at the Holiday Inn/Holidome, Interstate 70 at Chambers Road in Aurora, followed by luncheon and afternoon tours of a salt-contaminated bridge deck on 1-70 a mile east of Watkins. Corrosion of the steel in bridge decks is a serious, costly problem nation- wide. Cathodic protection, using a grid of slots cut into a bridge surface to distribute electrical current, stops corrosion even in a salt-contaminated deck. Federal and state research engineers want to demonstrate the technology and en- courage its use. Registration for the program is $15 prior to May 24 and $20 after that date. Checks payable to Colorado Department of Highways may be mailed to the Research Branch, Transportation Planning Division, CDOH, 4201 East Arkansas Ave. , Denver, CO 80222. The fee includes luncheon and bus transportation to and from the site. This open house is the first of several to be conducted across the country. Further information may be obtained from Mr. Rich Griffin, (303) 757-9506. 0 0 0 (OVER) -111 it 851257 .
