MORE TRAVELER AIDS
GREELEY. COLO. IN GLENWOOD CANYON
As Interstate 70 construction continues through the summer in Glenwood Canyon
160 miles west of Denver, the Colorado Department of Highways has more "traveler aids"
underway or being planned.
Since April 22, motorists traveling U.S . 6 through Glenwood Canyon have en-
countered one-lane escort car operations . Queues of motorists are guided past three
separate construction projects by contractor vehicles flashing amber lights, in a
four mile section in the center of the canyon. Holidays have been exempted, but the
escort car operation will operate until Labor Day from Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m.
to 5 p.m. and Friday, 7 a.m. to noon.
The Department has coordinated with local officials regarding traffic operations;
has changed signing; and held a public meeting in Glenwood Springs. New "traveler
aids" include:
1 . A recorded phone message, at 945-0148 in Glenwood
Springs, is updated as needed to inform callers
of changing traffic conditions.
2. By mid-July two rest areas will be available.
Westbound motorists will be able to use a rest
area and toilet facilities at Dotsero (exit #133) ;
eastbound travelers will have facilities west
of Glenwood Springs. At both parking areas,
Colorado Department of Highways employees will be
present to answer questions and hand out brochures.
3. Also by mid-July, a handout sheet will be given
to interested motorists . It will explain traffic
operations and offer background information.
4. Planning is underway for an AM information radio
service in the canyon. Motorists with AM radio
in their vehicles will be able to tune to a posted
frequency and listen to a broadcast message.
