top engineers for a strategy and design session. They decided to have the wrecked
1937 bridge dismantled, to rent a temporary one-lane bridge, and to develop
plans for a permanent, concrete bridge which will be built just north of the pre-
vious bridge location.
Kenney Construction Company, Inc. of Commerce City was hired to remove
the wrecked bridge, place an Accrow bridge across the 240-ft. gap, and set a 40 ft.
pier between railroad tracks and the Arkansas River to support a permanent bridge
deck later this summer. The pier must be placed prior to Spring runoff when the
river water will press against the banks. Work began February 18 and the temporary
bridge should be opened to motorists by mid March. Traffic signals will allow
alternate eastbound and westbound use of the bridge.
Trucks and buses detour around the site using S.H. 9 toward Hartsel or
S.H. 67, S.H. 96 and S.H. 69 through Wetmore and Westcliffe. Passenger cars
and light vehicles may use a commercial detour over the historic Royal Gorge
bridge. Park operators reduced the toll to $2/vehicle, from $4, and the ten-
mile bypass is available daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Department of Highways help-
ed publicize the detour through its public information office and recorded road
condition telephone services, but can't designate the detour with road signs
because it is not on the State Highway System.
While merchants in "detour" communities like Westcliffe benefit from the
added traffic volumes, those in Salida and other towns demand quick action. The
rented bridge is the nearest thing to an "instant bridge" available.
The State Highway Department will try to recover costs from the truck-
ing company and its insurance company, in accordance with established policy.
Bridge rental, placement and permanent concrete bridge design/construction are
expected to cost more than a million dollars.
