RELEASE AT WILL
RELOCATION COSTS REDUCED
FOR HISTORIC BRIDGES
The Colorado Department of Highways has announced that two historically
significant bridges are available for relocation, and revised cost estimates
have reduced the relocation costs involved.
Otero county officials are offering to donate the Swink bridge, a
296-ft-long truss bridge built in 1921 , to any person or organization willing
to relocate and rehabilitate it. The bridge crosses the Arkansas River near the
town of Swink. The two spans of this structure would require dismantling
prior to relocation. The entire relocation process, including dismantling, haul-
ing a distance of about 100 miles, and reassembly was estimated in May to cost
$210,480. That figure is now $203,760. Relocating a single 148-foot span is
now estimated to cost $148,56Q, instead of the $151 ,920 previously anticipated.
Rio Grande county is offering to donate the 1908 State Bridge, which
crosses the Rio Grande River about six miles west of Del Norte. Two spans are
involved. One is an original 125'3" through truss , and the other is a 45-foot
pony (siderail ) truss added in about 1928.
Depending on the distance of the move, the through truss may or may not
need to be dismantled. Without dismantling, the cost of relocating and erecting
both spans is now estimated to be $61 ,200 (from an earlier $71 ,200 figure) .
If dismantling is required, the total cost is now estimated to be $84,480 (also
ten thousand dollars less than the original estimate) .
Interested parties may contact Staff Historian Vicki Rottman or Rebecca
Herbst at the Colorado Department of Highways, (303) 757-9448. Proposals for
the Swink Bridge will be accepted until August 2 and those for the State Bridge
until August 6. Potential recipients must describe where and how the bridge will
be used, and identify the resources available to maintain the bridge once it is
moved and reconstructed.
