On March 29, 1983, the Board of County Commissioners met with the Chairman of
the Board of Adjustments to discuss the problems of attendance and having a
quorum to hear Board of Adjustment cases. As you are aware, State statute and
the Weld County Home Rule Charter requires a nine member Board of Adjustments
with seven members constituting a quorum and an affirmative vote of six
members to approve a variance. Since the Board of Adjustment is the final
authority on cases of this nature, it is extremely important to have a full
board at each meeting. Delays of meetings due to lack of quorums also can be
costly and viewed as a discourtesy to the applicants.
The Board of County Commissioners and Chairman of the Board of Adjustments
have discussed the problem and believe that the scheduling of a standing
meeting for the second Thursday of each month at 1:30 p.m. would allow all
members to schedule that time on your calendars on a standing basis. Prior to
the 1:30 pm meeting time a county sponsored luncheon would be held at a nearby
restaurant beginning at 12:00 pm for all members and alternates. In the event
no cases are to be heard, the meeting will be cancelled. This commitment of
time by each member is critical to insuring that the applicant gets a fair and
timely hearing. We therefore encourage all members and alternate members to
schedule the above time monthly and make every effort to be in attendance.
