Board of Weld County Commissioners:
After attending the public hearing at Kersey, Colorado, on April 21, 1983,
regarding the proposed ambulance taxing (district) request, I feel obligated
to write a short letter explaining my views.
As you are well aware, the Weld County 4-H Softball Field is located in
the town of Kersey, where there is an extensive softball program provided during
the summer for the 4-H kids from all sections of the county. All reasonable
precautions are always taken to insure a safe program for the youngsters, but
with hundreds of 4-Hers participating at ages from 9-19 there is the possibility
of injury.
Although the Kersey Volunteer Rescue Squad is not officially standing
by the field during these games, I would venture to say 99 percent of the time
one of their members is in attendance, either as a spectator, coach, or helping
with the softball program in some capacity. Even if no member were present,
it would only take a phone call and they would be there in five minutes or
less with a rescue unit. I am sure you would agree they are a well-trained
unit that can handle almost any situation. It is reassuring to me as I know
it is to other parents of kids playing softball that if some type of emergency
did arise, help from the Kersey Rescue Squad would be available almost immediately.
Although I am sure the Weld County Ambulance would provide adequate service
if called, there is no way possible they can respond in any comparable time
when the Kersey Rescue Squad is only three blocks away. This is a benefit
to kids from all parts of the county, not just the kids from the Kersey Fire
Protection District. They would all be treated the same whether they are from
the southern part of the county or the northern part.
Although I am sure there are parts of Weld County that do need better
ambulance service, as a landowner and taxpayer, I am always hesitant to want
more taxes imposed on myself. As recent times have forced all of us to take
a careful approach to any added expenditures, I hope that you as County Commissioners
will explore all alternatives before making your decision. Maybe the county
will have to tighten its purse strings like most private businesses have had
to do.

With these thoughts in mind, I would like to recommend that even if you
decide on the county ambulance (district) tax, leave the Platte Valley Fire
Protection District and Rescue Squad intact. My oronerty is not in this district
and I know the Kersey area is unique in that it has such an exceptional bunch
of people who volunteer their time and efforts. Don't take away something
they already have and replace it with another service that would cost the People
and be no better.
Thank you for considering these items.
Sincerely,
Gary Al es
