At left: the 1926 Baseline Bridge which crosses the South Platte River about eight miles northwest of Brighton in Adams coun- ty (240' x 19' 2" wide) . At right: the Una Bridge, built in 1910, crosses the Colorado River in Garfield county five miles south- west of Parachute (203' x 15' 1" wide) . HISTORIC BRIDGES MAY BE AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION "Adopt-a-Bridge?" That's not the program's official name, but a number of historic bridges in Colorado are available for reuse. They are free, but new users of the bridges must pay for their relocation. Last year the Colorado Department of Highways sponsored a statewide historic bridge survey, which was conducted by Fraser-design, a preservation-oriented con- sulting firm based in Loveland. About 550 bridges on state, county and city high- ways were evaluated for historical and engineering significance. Of these, 65 bridges were determined eligible to the National Register of Historic Places. Nine steel truss bridges, of the 65, .are currently funded for replacement or rehabilitation. They range from 50 feet to 360 feet in length. They could be used (MORE) IMIlla (OVER) >fRAll!/ORT AIIIMiCA`i V 841191 Highway News Page 2 Department of Highways Oct. 11, 1984 again for limited automobile use, or adapted in several ways.
