It formed in eolian sands . Included in this unit are some soils with subsoils shallower than 20 inches. Also included were some soils with loam and sandy clay loam subsoils. Typically the surface layer is grayish brown sand about 22 inches thick. The subsoil is brown sandy loam about 12 inches thick. The substratum, to a depth of 60 inches is loamy sand or sand. Permeability is moderately rapid. Available water capacity is moderate. Effective rooting depth is 60 inches or more. Surface runoff is very slow and erosion hazard is low. This soil is suited to limited cropping; intensive cropping is hazardous because of erosion. The cropping system should be limited to close grown crops such as alfalfa, wheat and barley. The soils also are adapted to irrigated pasture. A suitable cropping system would be alfalfa 3 to 4 years followed by corn and small grain for 2 years and alfalfa seeded with a nurse crop. Close grown crops may be irrigated from closely spaced contour ditches or sprinklers. Contour furrows or sprinklers should be used for new crops. Applications of nitrogen and phosphorous fertilizer will help maintain good production. The potential vegetation on this soil is dominated by sand .bluestem, sand reedgrass , switchgrass, sideoats grams, needle-and -thread, little 114 C":4 bluestem and blue grama. Potential production ranges from 2500 pounds per acre in favorable years to 1800 pounds per acre in unfavorable years. When range condition deteriorates, sand bluestem, switchgrass, sand reed- grass, sideoats grama and little bluestem decrease and production drops. Sand sage increases, undesirable weeds and annual plants invade and "blowout" conditions can occur as range conditions becomes poorer. Management of vegetation on this soil should be based on taking half and leaving half of the total annual production. Seeding is advisable if range is in poor condition. Sand bluestem, sand reedgrass , Indiangrass , switchgrass , sideoats grama , little bluestem and blue grama are suitable for seeding. Due to the wind erosion susceptiblility of this soil, seeding should be done with an interseeder or in a firm clean sorghum stubble -- prepared the growing season prior to seeding -- with a grass drill. Early spring seeding has proven most successful. Brush manage- ment can also help improve deteriorated range. Windbreaks an& environmental plantings are fairly well suited to this soil. Blowing sand and low available water capacity are the principle hazards to establishing trees and shrubs. The soil is so loose that trees need to be planted in shallow furrows and maintain vegetative cover between the rows . Supplemental irrigation may be needed to insure survival. Trees that are best suited and have good survival are Rocky Mt. juniper, eastern redcedar, ponderosa pine and Siberian elm. Shrubs best suited are skunlcbush sumac , lilac and Siberian peashrub. Wildlife is an important secondary use, with these soils best suited for openland and rangeland wildlife. In cropland areas , habitat favorable for ring-necked pheasants , mourning doves , and many non-game species chn - )L1 be developed by establishing wildlife areas for nesting anC escape cover. For pheasant, the inclusion of undisturbed nesting cover is vital and should be included in plans for habitat development; this is especially true in areas of intensive agriculture. Rangeland wild- life, exemplified by the pronghorn antelope, can be assisted and en- couraged by development of livestock watering facilities, proper live- stock grazing management, and range reseeding where needed. Almost all of this Osgood soil is located away from major growth centers and urbanization. Its primary limiting feature is the rapid permeability in the substratum and the hazard of contamination of ground water from seepage. Potential for recreation is poor due to the sandy surface. i Capability subclass IVe irrigated VIe nonirrigated Deep sand range site ti. In nonirrigated areas this soil is suited to winter wheat, barley and sorghum. Most of the area is devoted to winter wheat which is alter- nated with summer fallow to allow moisture accumulation. Normally, precipitation is too low to make beneficial use of fertilizers. Good cultural practices such as stubble mulch farming, strip cropping and minimum tillage are needed to combat wind and water erosion. Terr- acing may also be needed to control water erosion. The potential native vegetation on this site is dominated by sand bluestem, sand reedgrass and blue grama. Needle and thread, switch- grass, sideoats grama and western wheatgrass are also prominent. Po- tential production ranges from 2200 pounds per acre in favorable years to 1800 pounds per acre in unfavorable years. When range condition deteriorates, sand bluestem, sand reedgrass and switchgrass decrease and blue grama, sand dropseed and sand sage increase. Annual weeds and grasses invade the site as range condition becomes poorer. Management of vegetation on this soil should be based on taking half and leaving half of the total annual production. Seeding is advisable if range is in poor condition. Sand bluestem, sand reedgrass, switch- grass, sideoats grama, blue grama, pubescent wheatgrass and crested wheatgrass are suitable for seeding. The grass selected should meet the seasonal requirements of livestock. 'For successful seeding, a clean, firm, sorghum stubble-prepared seedbed and grass drill should be used. Early spring seeding has proven most successful. Windbreaks and environmental plantings are fairly well suited to this soil. Rangeland wildlife, exemplified by the pronghorn antelope, can be assisted and encouraged by development of livestock watering facilities , proper livestock grazing management, and range reseeding where needed. This Vona soil has good potential for urban and recreational develop- ment. Lawns, shrubs and trees, when once established, will do well. The primary limiting soil feature is the rapid permeability in the substratum and the hazard of contamination of ground water from sewage lagoons. Recreational development may be hindered by the soils suscepti- \ bility to wind erosion. Capability subclass IIIe irrigated IVe nonirrigated Sandy plains range site -Nelson fine sandy loam_ 0 _to 3 _percent slope This is a moderately deep, well drained soil on gentle plains at elevations of 4800 to 5050 feet. It formed in material weathered residually from soft sandstone. Included in this unit are some soils with sandstone at depths greater than 40 inches. Typically the surface layer is a pale brown fine sandy loam about 9 inches thick. The underlying material is light yellowish brown to pale yellow fine sandy loam or sandy loam about 21 inches thick. Depth to soft sandstone ranges from 20 to 40 inches. Permeability is moderately rapid. Available water capacity is moderate. I Effective rooting depth is 20 to 40 inches. Surface runoff is slow to medium and erosion hazard is low. This soil is suited to most of the irrigated crops commonly grown in the area, although some restrictions will occur because the soil is only moderately deep. A suitable cropping system is corn, corn for silage , barley, alfalfa 3 to 4 years and wheat. These soils are also well suited to irrigated pasture. Flow crops can be irrigated by furrows or sprinklers . Flooding from contour ditches and sprinkling are suitable methods of irrigation for close grown crops and pasture. Rangeland wild- life , exemplified by the pronghorn antelope, can be assisted and encou- raged by development of livestock watering facilities , proper livestock grazing management, and range reseeding where needed . The underlying sandstone is the most limiting feature of this Nelson soil. Neither septic tank absorption fields or sewage lagoons will operate properly. Site preparation for dwellings is more costly, Environmental and beautification plantings of trees and shrubs may be difficult to establish. This soil does , however, have good potential for recreational development , such as camp and picnic areas , and play- grounds. • Capability subclass Ills irrigated IVe nonirrigated Sandy plains range site 1 ' v 1? -Vona loamy sand, 0 to 3 percent slopes _ j- !-L' .. " ( . o•This is a deep, somewhat excessively drained soil on gentle plains and high terraces at elevations of 4600 to 5200 feet. It formed in eolian or alluvial deposits. Included in this unit are some leveled areas. Also, included are some soils with loamy substratums and some soils that are noncalcareous to depths of 60 inches . Typically the surface layer is a grayish brown loamy sand about 6 inches thick. The subsoil is a brown to light yellowish brown fine sandy loam about 22 inches thick. The substratum, to a depth of 60 inches, is a sandy loam or loamy sand. Permeability is moderately rapid. Available water capacity is moderate. Effective rooting depth is 60 inches or more. Surface runoff is slow and erosion hazard is low. Where irrigated this soil is suited to the commonly grown crops in the area. However, perennial grasses and alfalfa or close grown crops should be grown at least 50 percent of the time. Close grown crops and pasture can be irrigated with contour ditches and corrugations . Furrows, contour furrows and cross slope furrows will work on row crops. Sprin- kler irrigation is also recommended. Minimum tillage and crop residue utilization will help control erosion. Fertility maintenance is important. Crops grown on these soils respond to fertilizer applications of phosphorus and nitrogen. ;.ar ,, 1 Arluolls and_r.;ue.pts flooded These nearly level soils are on smooth plains in depressions and along the bottoms of natural drainageways throughout the survey area. The Aquolls , which have dark colored surface layers, make up about 55 percent of the mapping unit . The Aquepts , which have lighter colored surface layers , make up about 25 percent . About 20 percent is made up of soils which are well drained and soils which have sandstone or shale within 48 inches of the surface . These are deep , poorly drained soils . They formed in recent alluvium. Typically they have mottled , mildly to moderately alkaline , loamy or clayey surface layers and underlying materials which extend to a depth of 60 inches or more. They may or may not have a gleyed layer in the(: _ underlying material. Most of these soils are subject to excessive runoff. A watertable is at or near the surface in the spring and during the peak of the irri- gation season. These soils are used for rangeland and wildlife habitat , Some small areas are used for irrigated pasture. The potential native vegetation on these soils is dominated by switch grass , prairie cordgrass , saltgrass , alkali sacaton, big bluestem, Indiangrass , western wheatgrass , slender wheatgrass , sedge and rush, Cattails and bullrush occur on swampy spots associated with this site . Much of this site has an increased amount of salts due to farming and (: irrigation of adjacent areas. Potential production ranges frd'm 4000 pounds per acre in favorable years to 3000 pounds per acre in unfavorable years. When range condition deteriorates the tall and midgrasses decrease , production drops and saltgrass sedge and rush increase. Management of vegetation on this soil should be based on taking half and leaving half of the total annual production. Switchgrass , big bluestem Indiangrass , western wheatgrass , pubescent wheatgrass , intermediate wheatgrass , tall wheatgrass and tall fescue are suitable for seeding. The plants selected should meet the seasonal requirements of livestock. For successful seeding, a firm, prepared seedbed -- several tillage operations will normally be needed to eliminate the undesirable vegetation-- and a grass drill should be used . Early spring seeding has proven most successful. Wetland wildlife , especially waterfowl, utilize these areas . The availability of moisture due to the wetness of this soil allows pro- duction of wetland plants that provide nesting and protective cover. as well as some food for waterfowl . The juxtaposition of this soil to irrigated cropland areas where wildlife obtain much of their food , along with the cover provided , make this soil valuable to both wetland and openland wildlife. Openland wildlife , especially pheasants , use these areas for cover and nesting, while they also provide excellent cover for deer when found in areas inhabited by deer. Management for wildlife would include prevention of overgrazing by livestock , protection from unplanned fire , and prevention of drainage . • Where livestock are present , these valuable wildlife areas should be fenced to prevent encroachment and overuse by livestock. Capability subclass VIw Aquolls _ Salt meadow range site Aquepts - Wet meadow range site • a. - Olney fine sandy loam. _1 to 3 _percent slope This is a deep, well drained soil on gentle plains at elevations of 4600 to 5200 feet. It formed in mixed outwash deposits. Included in this unit are some soils with dark surface layers. Some leveled areas were also included in mapping. Typically the surface layer is grayish brown fine sandy loam about 10 inches thick. The subsoil is yellowish brown to very pale brown fine sandy clay loam about 14 inches thick. The substratum, to a depth of 60 inches, is calcareous fine sandy loam. Permeability is moderate. Available water capacity is moderate. Effective rooting depth is 60 inches or more . Surface runoff is medium and erosion hazard is low. Where irrigated this soil is suited to all crops adapted to this area, including corn, sugar beets , beans , alfalfa, small grains , potatoes and onions. An' example of a suitable cropping system is alfalfa 3 to 4 years followed by corn, corn for silage , sugar beets , small grain, beans and back to alfalfa. Some conservation practices such as land leveling, ditch lining and pipelines may ae needed for proper water application. All methods of irrigation are suitable with furrow irrigation the most common type used. Barnyard manure and commercial fertilizers are needed for top yields along with maintaining good organic matter content. • s'' In nonirrigated areas this soil is suited to winter wheat , barley and — sorghum. Most of the area is devoted to winter wheat which is alternated with summer fallow to allow moisture accumulation. Normally, precipi- tation i;s too low to make beneficial use of fertilizers. Good cultural practices such as stubble mulch farming, strip cropping and minimum tillage are needed to combat wind and water erosion, Terracing may also be needed to control water erosion. The potential native vegetation on this site is dominated by sand blue- stem, sand reedgrass and blue grama. Needle-and-thread, switch grass , sideoats grama and western wheatgrass are also prominent, Potential production ranges from 2200 pounds per acre in favorable years to 1800 pounds per acre in unfavorable years. Seeding is advisable if range is in poor condition, Sand bluestem, sand reedgrass , switchgrass , sideoats grama, blue grams, pubescent wheatgrass are suitable for seeding. The grass selected should meet the seasonal requirements of livestock. For successful seeding, a clean firm, sorghum stubble -- prepared the growing season prior to seeding -- or a firm prepared seedbed and grass drill should be used. Early spring seeding has proven most successful Windbreaks and environmental plantings are generally suited to this soil. Soil blowing is the principal hazard to establishing trees and shrubs . This hazard can be overcome by cultivating only in the tree row and by leaving a strip of vegetation between the rows. Supplemental irrigation may be necessary at the time of planting and during dry periods. Trees that are best suited and have good survival are Rocky Mt. juniper, eastern redcedar, ponderosa pine, Siberian elm, Russian olive and hackberry. Shrubs best suited are skunkbush sumac , lilac and, Siberian peashrub. Wildlife is an important secondary use, with these soils best suited for openland and rangeland wildlife. In cropland areas , habitat favorable for ring-necked pheasants , mourning doves , and many non-game species can be developed by establishing wildlife areas for nesting and escape cover. For pheasant , the inclusion of undisturbed nesting cover is vital and should be included in plans for habitat development; this is especially true in area of intensive agriculture. Rangeland wildlife , exemplified by the pronghorn antelope, can be assisted and encouraged by development of livestock watering facilities , proper levestock grazing management, and range reseeding where needed. Rapid expansion of the Greeley and surrounding area has resulted in urbanization of much of this Olney soil. It has a good potential for urban and recreational development. Its only limiting feature is the moderately rapid permeability in the substratum and the hazard of con- tamination of ground water from sewage lagoons. Lawns , shrubs and trees for beautification will do well. Capability subclass Ile irrigated IVe non-irrigated Sandy plains range site - Olney loamy sand, 1 to 3 percent slope This is a deep, well drained soil on smooth plains at elevations of 4600 to 5200 feet. It formed in mixed outwash deposits . Included in this unit are some small leveled areas , Typically the surface layer is grayish brown to brown loamy sand about 9 inches thick. The subsoil is yellowish brawn to very pale brown fine sandy clay loam about 15 inches thick. The substratum, to a depth of 60 inches, is calcareous fine sandy loam. Permeability is moderate. Available water capacity is moderate. Effective rooting depth is 60 inches or more. Surface runoff is slow and erosion hazard is low. Where irrigated this soil is suited to the commonly grown crops in the area. However, perennial grasses and alfalfa or close grown crops should be grown at least 50 percent of the time. Close grown crops and pasture can be irrigated with contour ditches and corrugations. Furrows , contour furrows and cross lope furrows will work on row crops. Sprinkler irrigation is also recommended. Minimum tillage and crop residue utilization will help control erosion. Fertility maintenance is important. Crops grown on these soils respond to fertilizer applications of phosphorous and nitrogen. 0 with summer fallow to allow moisture accumulation. Normally, precipi- tation iS too low to make beneficial use of fertilizers , Good cultural practices such as stubble mulch farming, strip cropping and minimum tillage are needed to combat wind and water erosion. Rangeland wildlife , exemplified by the pronghorn antelope , can be assisted and encouraged by development of livestock watering facilities , proper livestock grazing management , and range reseeding where needed. This Olney soil has good potential for urban development. Its only limiting feature is the moderately rapid permeability in the substratum and the hazard of contamination of ground water from sewage lagoons. The loamy sand surface layer may have some limitation for recreational development. Lawns , shrubs and trees will do well , when once established. Capability subclass Ille irrigated IVe non-irrigated Sandy plains range site k - Renohill clay loam, 3 to 9 percent This is a moderately deep, well drained soil on upland hillls and ridges at elevations of 4850 to 5200 feet. It formed in materials weathered residually from shale. Included in this unit are some soils with shale deeper than 40 inches and some soils with light clay subsoils. Typically the surface layer is grayish brown clay loam about 9 inches thick. The subsoil is grayish brown clay loam about 12 inches thick. Depth to shale ranges from 20 to 40 inches . Permeability is slow. Available water capacity is moderate. Effective rooting depth is 20 to 40 inches . Surface runoff is medium to rapid and erosion hazard is moderate. This soil is suited to limited cropping; intensive cropping is hazar- dous because of erosion. The cropping system should be limited to close grown crops such as alfalfa , wheat and barley, The soils also are adapted to irrigated pasture. A suitable cropping system would be alfalfa 3 to 4 years followed by corn and small grain for 2 years and alfalfa seeded with a nurse crop. Close grown crops may be irrigated from closely spaced contour ditches. Contour furrows should be used for row crops . Applications of barnyard manure and commercial fertlizers will help maintain good production. Minimum tillage and crop residue utilization is important. The potential native vegetation on this soil is dominated by western wheatgrass and blue grams. Buf£alograss is also present. Potential production ranges from 1000 pounds per acre in favorable years to 600 pounds per acre in unfavorable years, When range condtion deteriorates a blue grama-buffalograss sod forms. Undesirable weeds and annuals invade the site as range condition becomes poorer. Management of vegetation on this soil should be based on taking half and leaving half of the total annual production, Range pitting can help reduce runoff from this site. Seeding is advisable if range is in poor condition. Western wheatgrass, blue grama, sideoats grams , buffalo- grass , pubescent wheatgrass and crested wheatgrass are suitable for seeding. The grass selected should meet the seasonal requirements of livestock. For successful seeding, a clean, firm, sorghum stubble -- prepared the growing season prior to seeding -- or a firm, prepared seedbed and a grass drill should be used. Early spring seeding has proven most successful. Wind break and environmental plantings are generally not suited to this soil. On-site investigation is needed to determine if plantings are feasible. Successful plantings will require supplemental water. Wildlife is an important secondary use , with these soils best suited for openland and rangeland wildlife. In cropland areas, habitat favorable for ring-necked pheasants , mourning doves , and many non-game species can be developed by establishing wildlife areas for nesting and escape cover. Rangeland wildlife , exemplified by the pronghorn antelope , can be assisted and encouraged 0 by development of livestock watering facilities , proper livestock grazing management , and range reseeding where needed. This Renohill soil has a poor potential for urban and recreational development. Its primary limiting features are the underlying shale, low strength, and moderate to high shrink-swell, all of which will present severe problems in dwelling and road construction, use of septic tank absorption fields and sewage lagoons. • Capability subclass IVe irrigated Vie nonirrigated Clayey plains range site -- C Date : WASTES INVENTORY LIVESTOCK FEEDING OPERATIONS / County: _toe rU Company Name and Address I{>i//,Am S Ale.e✓g/1/c e // as1 /&w/e." // l-l/, 6A,,% , ,4 ',Sz /1✓2/7 "t' z?-X Le) 2- Type of Operation : Feedlot Dairy Farm Other : • 9'r°•rGloaivGC Stockyard Hog Farm Average Stock Population (Give daily and monthly changes if any ) 300 L1/EY17Q0/Y.-L?gyp ,4Are 14,7 it/ih I'd141'N ♦!✓ A5P //1!041✓/ c//,Y- ` ( 5 /'c/ o Total Stock Pen Area and Capacity Ply (yie Jes)f /./e7/, _2oO k.,42i17 Are Stock Pens Paved?
