This evaluation is based on a Statement of Existing filed with Weld County in December of 2002 and information provided by the Hellmers in the form of water usage data from Longs Peak Water District. The water usage data shows that the overall daily average household use at the Hellmer residence is 126 gallons per day. The one-month maximum daily use during the record period (2005) was 238 gallons per day. The average flow utilized for calculations for a two-bedroom house and six full-time employees would be 150 gallons per day per bedroom and 15 gallons per day per employee. This comes to a total of 390 gallons per day. The design flow would be 150% of this amount or 585 gallons per day. The water usage data shows that the Hellmer residence utilizes significantly less than the standard calculated flows. In addition, the Statement of Existing filed with Weld County indicates a leach field size of 2981 square feet. Utilizing a worse-case scenario for percolation rate of 60 minutes per inch and back calculating design flow, results in 1036 gallons per day. Therefore, the leach field is sized to handle more than what the records indicate is used or what the standard design flows would be. The Statement of Existing filed with Weld County also indicates that the septic tank is 750 to 1000 gallons in size. Using the design flow from above of 585 gallons per day and Weld County's requirement for 30 hours of detention time for design flow would require a septic tank size of 731 gallons. Therefore, a septic tank size of 750 to 1000 gallons is adequate.
