Box 670 La Porte, Colorado 80535 RE: Septic System Design for Lot 11, Black Hollow Acres, Weld County, Colorado Gentlemen: We have designed a septic system for the site referenced above. It is our understanding that the proposed septic system is to service a three (3)bedroom residence. This design was based on a subsurface and percolation investigation conducted by our firm ( # 4512-01-01-01, dated July 2, 1998). The site is located east of Fort Collins, west of Weld County Road No. 19 on Weld County Road No. 86. The building site on the 29± acre parcel is relatively flat to gently sloping to the east and is vegetated with grasses and weeds. Black Hollow Reservoir is located more than 1/4 mile to the east of the property. The percolation investigation indicates percolation rates of 120, 60, 80, 60, 80 and 48 minutes per inch with an average percolation rate of 74 minutes per inch. The subsurface conditions consist of slightly silty clay to the depths explored. Laboratory tests indicate that the clays exhibit a very high swell potential. For water balance calculations, we have assigned an absorption rate of 0.1 gallons/ft2/day due to the swell potential of the soils. Free groundwater was not encountered in the borings. Due to the slow percolation rates and high swell characteristics an engineered septic system will be required for these conditions. Based on a three (3) bedroom residence, the conditions described above the ISDSR for Weld County, we recommend a 1000 gallon septic tank be followed by an evapotranspiration/absorption (ETA)bed of at least 3400 square feet. We recommend that Hi- capacity Infiltrator chambers be used in place of the typical gravel mounds. We recommend that an effluent filter be installed in or after the septic tank to prolong the life of the system. Refer to the ISDSR for the County, component manufacturer, Figure Nos. I and 2 of this report, and other readily available literature for system maintenance requirements. We recommend that the ETA bed be located at least fifty (50) feet away from the house. This is to minimize the effects of wetting the potentially swelling soils at the foundation for the house. This percolation investigation was conducted in compliance with local statutes and guidelines and to cut-rent accepted industry standards for this region. The test results are based on those standards. The locations and elevations tested were controlled by those statutes, site conditions and/or the client's preference. The contractor and/or owner must carefully plan the elevations of the structures if gravity flow of the wastewater to the septic system is desired. We recommend that the top of the bed or trenches be at least one (1) foot below any floor level with gravity sewer. Otherwise, a pump system will be required. The profile hole drilled indicates the subsurface conditions at that location and has limited access to visual observation which may not allow the detection of some soil layers. We recommend that a test pit be excavated prior to construction, inspected by the Health Department or Engineer to determine if these conditions exist. Subsurface conditions described from the borings may vary from visual observations of the test pits and may necessitate changes in the designed system. The Engineer shall be notified if any conditions observed in the field vary from those described in this report. Soil percolation is not an exact science. The minimum number of percolation holes required by state and county statutes often provides general indications or tendencies of the soil absorptive capacities, but do not provide an adequate statistical average for scientific analysis. Septic systems occasionally fail prematurely due to often undetermined causes. All existing and future owners of the property shall accept responsibility for maintaining the system and outcomes of a poorly maintained or abused system. The county health department has final acceptance over these test results and referenced system. All construction shall be in compliance with the septic system permit. Hi-cap Infiltrators - 56 Hi-capacity Infiltrators are to be used in place of the typical gravel mounds. B. Wicking Material - The wicking material transfers liquids from the gravel storage to the vegetative cover for evaporation and plant transpiration. The wicking material shall be clean, fine sand such as wash tailings from a gravel plant. Wash tailings may need to be amended with concrete sand to meet state specifications. Material must be tested and approved by Engineer prior to purchase. C. Sodding or seeding - Transfer of liquids to the atmosphere by vegetative transpiration is an integral part of the design. The top surface of the ETA field(s) must be sodded or seeded with a moderate water use, drought resistant grass such as a tall fescue. Sod with heavy clay shall not be used. The sodded or seeded grass cover must be established prior to use of the system. D. Septic tank and distribution boxes - Shall be installed on a stable base and shall be level. E. Size of septic tank recommended - 1000 gallons with effluent filter. F. Trees or shrubs - Shall not be planted within ten feet of the field(s)without submittal to Engineer for approval of species and location. H. Underground lawn irrigation systems shall not be placed within ten (10) feet of any septic system components. Irrigation over the bed should be limited so that the water does not penetrate more than ten(10) inches. I. Component grades and elevations - The building sewer to the septic tank shall be laid with a minimum fall of 1/8 inch per foot (1/4 inch fall per foot is recommended). The grade of the Infiltrators shall be level. The top of the ETA bed shall be at least one foot below the lowest floor with gravity sewer. The wastewater must bepumped to the bed if the minimum grade cannot be met. J. Drainage - Drainage swales or berms shall be constructed as shown or as necessary to prevent any run-off from flooding the field(s). The field(s) shall have a 1% to 2% surface cross slope to promote drainage and air flow. V. Additional System Requirements A. Vehicular traffic or other heavy loadings - Shall be prohibited over the field(s). B. Animal traffic and point loads - Hoofed animal traffic over the field(s) shall be prohibited. Other point loads which would indent the field(s) surface shall be prohibited. C. Grass cover - The specified grass cover is essential to proper functioning of the system. The purpose of the evaluation was to determine ifthe system is suitable for servicing an additional connection from the pole barn that will have a toilet,lavatory and sink.In our previous letter dated October 3,2003, it was understood that there would be no additional persons than in the residence to utilize the facilities in the barn.Later we were informed that 3 employees may utilize the facilities in the barn during equipment delivery and pick up but not on a daily basis.This letter provides a revision based on the additional usage. The 6000 square foot low-pressure drip-irrigation system was constructed in 1999 for the 5-btdtuoni residence with an average sewage loading of 750 gallons per day(GPD)and a maximum sewage load of 1125(GPD)for 10 occupants.There we ctntently 4 occupants in the 5-beroom residence.The drain field was oversized for construction convenience and calculations indicate the drain field should accommodate an average flow of 769 GPD.The facilities in the pole barn will be available for 3 employees during pick up and delivery of equipment-The additional usage from the pole barn is estimated to be no more than 18 CaPD based at 2 toilet and lavatory usages for 3 persons per day.
