It is our understanding that the 17.6+ acre parcel is to be divided into six (6) residential lots of approximately 2.5 acres each. The purpose of this investigation is to identify potential geologic hazards and potential mineral resources which may conflict with the development intended The conclusions and recommendations presented in this report are based upon the acquired field data. review of the available literature, and previous experience with similar geologic conditions In this area. SITE DESCRIPTION The site is located northeaL. of Greeley, on the southwest corner of the intersection of East C Street and Balsam Avenue. The parcel consists of an agricultural field with a general, gradual to moderate slope to the southwest. Concrete lined irrigation ditches are located along the east and north property lines and two small gullies are in the south portion of the parcel. SITE INVESTIGATION The site was visually inspected on June 17, 1999. The locations of geologic features are approx nate and should be considered only to the degree implied by he methods used to make those measurements. GEOLOGY The proposed site lies in the Colorado Piedmont Section of the Great Plains Physiographic Pro vince. The Colorado Piedmont is an elongated trough in the Great Plains, adjacent to the Front Range of the Southern Rockies. The Colorado Piedmont was formed when uplift of the area in Miccene- Eocene times (20 - 50 million years ago) produced an increase of stream erosion result.ng in scouring next to the foothills and outlying areas. The Piedmont is bordered by the southern Rockies to the west,Great Plains escarpment to the northeast, and Palmer Divide to the south. The boundary of the eastern edge Colorado Piedmont is not well defined. Structurally, the site lies in the Denver Basin, which is a thick accumulation of Paleozoic and Mesozoic Era sediments involved with down warping in the basin area and uplift of the adjacent highlands. It is our understanding that faulting has not taken place in the recent historic past n this area. This area is classified as being in Seismic Zone 1 (Uniform Building Code- Chapter 2 , The site is overlain with surficial eolian and/or alluvial sandy soils. These soils consist primarily of sand, silt, and gravel with anticipated thicknesses of five (5) feet or more. The Soil Conseriation Service maps indicate the property is overlain with moderately well drained soils and the potential for flooding is low. The SCS tables indicate that the soils may have slight limitations for plat went of septic tank/a.bsorption fields and slight to moderate limitations for placement of shallow foundations and basements. 1 The Cretaceous Laramie Formation underlies the surticial soils. The Laramie Formation consists of silty shale with inter-bedded sandstones, clays and seams of coal. The thickness of the Laramie Formation is in the order of several hundred feet in this area. Outcrops of the bedrock we c not observed. POTENTIAL GEOLOGIC HAZARDS AND RECOMMENDATIONS The shales of the Laramie Formation and associated soils may be potentially expansive. Some of the eolian (wind-blown) deposits may exhibit collapse when wetted under foundation loading The effects of the potentially swelling and/or collapsible soil and rock can be minimized by c ueful planning prior to construction at the site. A geotechnical investigation should be conducted a each site to identify if these conditions exist. The slopes along th, south portion of the property may in licate signs of minor slope movement in the past. Small gulli s indicate a possible erosion potential along these slopes. These slopes sH e,ld be avoided when choosing the building locations. Any overlot grading in these areas should he carefully planned to minimize disturbance of the ground. Cleared areas should be re-vegeta!ed as soon as practicable. SAND, GRAVEL AND QUARRY AGGREGATE RESOURCE The Colorado Geological Survey (CGS) describes this site as being in stream terrace deposit r; with poor quality resources. Most, or all, of the known gravel pits in this area are located in the plain deposits. A site specific analysis for sand and gravel resources was not conducted fur this investigation. Based on these conditions and current mining practices, it is our opinion that it is not currently feasible to extract sand and gravel for economical purposes at this site. CONCLUSION Based on the conditions observed and researched, there are no significant geologic hazards at this time on the property. Geotechnical investigations are recommended for each building site to identify potentially swelling, collapsible or compressible soils and/or bedrock strata. The potentially unstable slopes along the south side of the property should be avoided when choosing the building locations. The CGS describes the site as being located in stream terrace deposits with poor quality aggregate. Our opinion is that the potential sand and gravel resources in this area may not meet quality standards for local gravel pit operations. Based on these conditions and our observations. it is our opinion that the development intended is compatible with the geologic conditions at the site The data presented herein were collected to help determine the feasibility of this project. Professional judgments on design alternatives and criteria are presented in this report. l'he;e are based on evaluation of technical information gathered, partly on our understanding of the characteristics of the development proposed, and partly on our experience with geologic conditions in the area. We do not guarantee the performance of the project in any respect, only that our geologic study and judgments rendered meet the standard of care of our profession. 2 • LIST OF REFERENCES Schwochow, S.D., Schroba R.R., and Wicklein, P.C., Atlas of Sand,Gravel, and Quarry Aggrc ate Resources-Colorado Front Range Counties,Colorado Geological Survey,Special Publication 5-B, I974.
