IN ROAD IMPROVEMENTS At the State Highway Commission's county hearings this autumn, road requests from county and community delegations totaled a figure almost eight times the construction money available in Colorado. Satisfying all the road and bridge requests voiced at hearings in Pueblo, Denver and Grand Junction would require an estimated $ 2,279,043,000. The state's construction budget for the current fiscal year began with a total of $ 294.3 million. By location, the road and bridge requests were: Pueblo hearings $ 417,439,000 Denver hearings 1,379,616,000 Grand Junction hearings 481,988,000 Fifty-five delegations submitted requests this autumn, asking for 402 separate construction projects. In 1985 the Commission will schedule its hear- ings in Colorado Springs, Denver and Grand Junction. The county hearings initiate a process which helps decide how federal and state funds will be spent. Traffic counts, accident frequency, a Five Year High- way Program of Projects and recommendations from Highway Division district engineers are some of the other factors considered. Projects to be funded are usually announced at a Highway Commission meeting in late Spring or early summer. 0 O 0 (OVER) TtAINORTAIION, AICA{YA{Ai 841200 3-Fa4-e Nr9i,way 13O ' Ter, 1 -- fl-8t.-/ Highway News Page 2 Department of .Highways Dec. 13, 1984 FUNDS AVAILABLE FOR TRANSIT SERVICES GRANTS The Department of Highways has announced that funds are obtainable for two grant programs it administers under the Urban Mass Transportation Administration (UMTA) . The Section 16(b) (2) program provides capital equipment and vehicles for elderly and handicapped services, and the Section 18 program grants "operating and administrative" expenses or capital equipment to transit services in rural areas. Private, non-profit organizations which transport elderly or handicapped citizens may apply for capital assistance grants in the Section 16(b) (2) program. Colorado has $ 275,130 in federal money currently available, which is about the same amount of money received from UMTA last year. The money equates to about twelve vehicles. The Department has received confirmation from UMTA that $ 706,653 in federal funds are available to Colorado for public transit in rural areas. State agencies, subdivisions of the state (communities and counties) , Indian tribes, and private non-profit organizations may apply. This year's allocation is about three percent more than last year's grant level. Application packages will be mailed out in January. But interested persons are encouraged to inquire now, by calling 757-9266 (Denver phone) or writing to the Transit Unit, Division of Transportation Planning, Colorado Dept. of Highways, 4201 East Arkansas Ave. , Denver CO 80222. 0 0 0 BIDS TO BE OPENED Jan. 3: delete: I 70-2(119) opens Jan. 17 instead.
