Dear Bill:
As you may know,Hewlett-Packard has announced the closing of their Greeley facility in the
next eighteen to twenty-four months. I met with their staff from Palo Alto yesterday concerning
the marketing plans for that building. It appears that we will have an excellent cooperative effort
directed at finding a new owner and new jobs for our community.
One of the items discussed yesterday was the possible use of the Hewlett-Packard facility as the
new home for the Colorado Technology Institute. I know this is one of your high priority
initiatives for Colorado and Greeley has a plan worthy of that initiative. The Hewlett-Packard
building is not only a beautiful structure, but it rests on one of the most attractive campuses in
Colorado. The facility was designed and wired to support high tech activities, with more than
adequate space for classrooms and conference facilities. Generous parking is available. All
infrastructure, including fiber optics, are in place. There are recreational and employee amenities
right on site. An added bonus is the availability of land on the site for expansion and for the
businesses who would want to partner with the Technology Institute.
In addition to the excellent physical facilities, Greeley is equally prepared as a community. You
may be aware of our conversations with Mark Holzman regarding the technology pilot project
being planned for this summer. We already have in place a technology partnership which is a
model of multigovernmental cooperation. That group includes the Mayor and City Manager,
County Commission Chairman and Finance Director,UNC President, Aims Community College
President, School Board President and Superintendent, Greeley Weld Chamber President and
Greeley Tribune Publisher. School District 6 is already one of the leaders in technology

equipment, facilities and teaching staff. Aims is, of course, recognized around the State as the
leader in the training and retraining of employees for business. It would not take much effort to
extend our existing partnership to include CU, CSU and Front Range Community College.
After my conversations with the Hewlett-Packard staff, I think it is very possible that the
Hewlett-Packard facility could be acquired in a manner that would be a win-win situation for the
State, the City and Hewlett-Packard. I know your leadership and involvement could put this deal
together very easily. If we can get the facility at the "right price," it means less funds have to be
raised and more of the funds can go towards the development of programs instead of brick and
mortar.
I believe the Hewlett-Packard facility is an excellent opportunity. I extend an invitation to you
and your staff to visit the facility and explore with our partnership the use of the building for the
Technology Institute. I recognize that you will receive many offers from around Colorado, but
this is a unique opportunity to bring your vision of a Technology Institute to life in a timely and
cost effective manner.
Cordially,
Jerry Wanes
Mayor
