RE : Jim Docheff, Sr.
To Whom It May Concern:
This letter is to support of a decision in favor of granting a Specia ,.
Use Permit to Jim Docheff, Sr .
On a personal basis as well as a company basis, we have had a long-
term relationship with Jim Docheff, Sr . and his family. Jim Docheff,
Sr . is a respected member of the local dairy community. He has beer
very involved with dairy associations including leadership positions
within those associations . His involvement in these associations is
reflective of his dairy management in that it is one of the most
progressive dairies in the area . His outside involvement helps h]m
keep abreast tc good business practices and environmental concerns .
A tour of the dairy would provide evidence of a well-managed
operation. The livestock, equipment and facilities are well
maintained. Through their activities off the dairy, it is obvious to
the observer that practices on the dairy are a composite of those used
by successful dairies .
Dairies are one of the most sought after industries in agriculture .
The reason is their economic impact on an area . From direct
employment to the collateral jobs created for their suppliers, dairies
create a desirable additional to an economic base.
Having operations of the caliber of Jim Docheff, Sr. is a plus to any
community. He and his family operate using good business techniq'ies
while balancing socia' and environmental values .
We would recommend approval their request for a Special Use Permit .
Sincerely,
EXtfillit

My name is Shawn Martin. I own Colorado Animal Health. We supply animal health and dairy
products to thirty plus dairies in this region. I am writing this letter in support of the Docheff dairy
permit. I have done business with Jim Docheff for the past twelve years. Jim is an exceptional
dairyman with his main concerns going toward the cleanliness and appearance of his dairy. Jim
spares no expense in keeping manure cleared from pens and spraying the buildings for fly control.
On my weekly route I see many dairies and can say that Docheff dairy is a top-notch operation.
The free stalls are cleaned daily with the manure hauled and spread on fields or put in
piles where it is then composted. The cows are on an excellent vaccine program to protect them from any
diseases that may be brought onto the dairy. Through the summer months the cows are dipped
with a fly control product and the barns are all sprayed to keep fly population to a minimum.
Docheff dairy is family owned and operated, unlike some of the bigger dairies that are
corporate owned, with many outside investors. I believe the family owned dairy has more concerns
about their dairy. Not just about how much money they can make. Jim Docheff and his sons
respect the environment, neighbors and the appearance of their dairy. I encourage anyone to drive
around the country and look at dairies, then go to the Docheff dairy. You will see a family that
takes a lot of pride in their place of business. We have to remember that this is Jim Docheff and his
sons livelihood. To keep up with the dairy industry today there is a need to add more cows.

Dear Sheri:
The Docheff Dairy owners have strived and continually maintain a very clean and
healthy dairy and feeding operation. They as well have absolutely been
environmentally conscious of the applications of properly recommended amounts of
soil nutrients on all lands associated within their direct control. Recycling through
composting has been employed to benefit the local area and communities.
As a concerned property owner, I would strongly recommend the approval of the
requested Special Review Permit and Specific Development Plan. A commitment in
sup rt of our lo..:l .•ricultural industry is absolutely necessary.

Dear Ms. Lockman,
It is a pleasure to recommend the Jim Docheff Dairy at 1441 Weld County Road 28,
Longmont, CO for a discharge permit. I have known Jim for many years and have
observed his dairy operation many times.
I am particularly impressed by the methods they have developed to manage manure by
composting, pen cleaning, harrowing pens, fly control and odor control. Without a doubt
the Docheff Dairy is one of the best-run dairies I have observed in my travels.
In my position as State Veterinarian 1 am concerned with disease issues in the state. The
Docheff facility has many controls in place that are sound from a discharge standpoint
and reduces potentials for disease spread.
The Docheff Dairy is very progressive and in tune with future needs to protect the
environment. Feel free to call me at any time to answer any questions.
Sincerely,
Pik

Dear Sheri,
My husband and I have lived across the road from Jim and Judy Docheff
since December of 1998.
The first time I met Jim was when we had a snow storm right after
we moved in and I heard him plowing our driveway. When I offered to
pay him, he refused saying that's what neighbors do for each other.
Their three sons that live nearby have also shown us the same neighborly
curtsey and friendship as Jim and Judy.
To this day we could not ask for better neighbors or friends. They are
hard working honest people and a credit to the community.
You would never know that you lived across the road from a dairy farm
but only from some of the best friends that you could have.

Dear Ms. Lockman,
I am writing this letter in behalf of Mr. Jim Docheff, Longmont, Colorado, who is
owner of Docheff Dairy. Jim is in the process of applying for permitting to allow for
expansion of his dairy operation from the current size of approximately 600 cows at the
current facility to 1800 cows. I am a veterinarian who is currently employed as a dairy
technical consultant for Pharmacia and Upjohn of Kalamazoo, Ml. I travel extensively
throughout the western United States and work with a number of dairies from Washington to
Texas and am familiar with dairies.
There are several reasons that 1 support the permitting for the expansion in animal
numbers at Docheff Dairy. Jim has operated a dairy and farming operation at the current site
since 1979. I have known Jim since the early 1980's when 1 was faculty member at the
College of Veterinary Medicine, Colorado State University. During the time I have know
Jim, he has maintained a clean, well kept, profitable farming and dairy operation. The dairy
has production well above the state average for cows tested in the state of Colorado with the
DHI program. The dairy is exemplary in providing a clean, comfortable environment for the
cows. The dairy currently utilizes the crops that cow off the 120 owned acres and an
additional 300 to 400 rented acres. Jim is committed to good environmental stewardship and
operation of a dairy and farming enterprise that facilitates the support of that stewardship.
The expansion of the scope of the operation is necessary if the operation is to
continue to provide the financial support for families of Jim and three of his sons who also
currently derive their livelihood from the dairy. The dairy industry is important to the state of
Colorado and the state needs progressive producers like Jim and his sons to provide high
quality dairy products for the population of the state.
Sincerely, „-1
