Dear Carl,
I appreciated you taking time to have breakfast with me and bringing me up to
speed on the status of the new indoor facility to be constructed at Island Grove Park.
After becoming aware of the most recent changes to the project, I certainly Share
your frustration regarding these latest design changes. It is these design changes I am
compelled to comment on.
When the project was first presented to me, I was very excited! The Greeley
community was finally making complete one of the finest, if not the finest, arena
facilities in the western United States. Having traveled extensively around the western
part of the U.S., I have always been dismayed that Greeley has such a world class
outdoor facility and no indoor facility, when other communities with less need and
resources possessed both. So, when I was made aware of the Cities plan to build an
incoor facility, I was certainly excited.
After several meetings with you and reviewing the project, I was convinced hat
the project was a well thoughtout and functional venue that would become a major
asset to the area. Based on this belief, I personally decided to financially support the
project. However, with the Cities plan to install cement as the arena floor, my
enthusiasm for the project has diminished.
I believe that the decision to cement the arena floor is a miscalculation that will
not only add to the overall cost of the project, but will also limit the facilities ability :o
efficiently function as a venue for the majority of events that it was originally intenced
for It is not economically feasible to add and remove dirt to the arena floor for the
various events to be held in the facility. The cost of this would, in some cases, be
restrictive to the point that many events could not be held there. However, by leaving
an earthen floor, you only limit the facilities ability to host events of which the
community already has adequate facilities to accommodate. With the ability to pack
and carpet the earthen floor, you truly do have a multi-purpose facility that will
accommodate a much broader range of events.
2000-20: 1
Based on the fact that our community already possesses numerous venues with
concrete flooring, it is my hope that the City will give further consideration to the issie
of cement flooring. Should the City decide to proceed with the plan to cement the
arena floor, I will be forced to withdraw my support due to the fact that the facility will no
longer be an efficient and functional building for which it was originally intended.
S rely,
A ja---
