Mrs Weber's letter was shared with the 4-H Horse Superintendent, Debbie Warehime.
It is a normal procedure of Mrs Weber to either call or write each year before or after
the horse show to voice her concerns. I have yet to see her volunteer for any work
assignments during the Fair.
She does have some valid concerns and hopefully they will be worked out by next
year's fair.
Sincerely,
syrn.

Mr. Geile:
I am sharing this letter, as you requested, to reflect on activities at the Weld County Fair this past
month. I had called you with concerns about the very late changes in the schedule of the 4-H
Horse Show events. The horse project requires that adults must be available to assist and
transport 4-H members. Parents generally must arrange their schedules to a accommodate the
demands of the fair. This late change was not appropriate and could have jeopardized safety in
some cases, if parents could not attend.
Overall the activities at the horse events went well. The weather was cooperative, and the tone
seemed generally quiet. Some concerns that need discussion are:
Parking - each year the rules seem a little different, the parking patterns are not
consistent, and areas are not well marked.
Checking in for classes - the paddock area is defined, and the volunteers do a good job. It
would be more fair to the riders, if the contestants performed or entered in a pre-determined order
and there was no advantage for the more experienced or aggressive riders.
Use of tobacco - This is a tobacco free facility, and a youth activity. These are both
reasons that adults should not be visibly using tobacco, or using tobacco in close proximity of
youth exhibitors.
One Judge - With the exception of the trail course, all events were judged by the same
individual throughout the 2 day show. This sets up a situation that a judge may not be able to
give a fresh, objective look to each rider in each class. Possibly the schedule interference caused
that other judges were not available.
This list of concerns seems small, but can be considered to improve future activities. As
mentioned above, the activities of the Horse Show flowed quite well, and I didn't identify any
major problems or objections, other that the schedule problems.
I appreciate your interest in the 4-H program, and the Weld County Fair. I trust that you will be
an influence that future activities and schedules will be solid and well understood by the
participants and the organizers.
