BOX 1948 CJuly 26, 2000 GREELEY, COLORADO 80633 COLORADO Mr. and Mrs. Neal Lindsey 2847 15`h Avenue Court Greeley, CO 80631 RE: Response to Letter Regarding Prairie: Dogs Dear Mr. and Mrs. Lindsey: The Board of County Commissioners of Weld County has received your letter expressing concern over the demise of prairie dog colonies in those areas of Weld County now being developed. Specifically, you questioned why relocations of those colonies have not been allowed. Enclosed is a copy of C.K.S. § 35-7-203. Subsection(1) of that statute requires that the Board o( County Commissioners approve any release of"destructive rodent pests" if the pests are coining from another county (an "inter-county transfer"). The term "destructive rodent pests" includes prairie dogs. Since the passage of C.R.S. § 35-7-203, the Board of County Commissioners has heard onl_✓ out request for approval of the relocation of prairie dogs. The request was made by the Colorado Division of Wildlife for the relocation of prairie does onto State owned property at the Banner Lakes State Wildlife area. The Division of Wildlife had proposed to relocate prairie dogs either from within Weld County (an "intra-county relocation") or from another county into Weld County (an "inter-county relocation"). The Board of County Commissioners denied such request. A copy of the Board's Resolution is enclosed. Intra-county relocations of prairie dogs do not require the prior approval of the Board of Ccunt y Commissioners; however, as with inter-county relocations, intra-county relocations require the issuance of a relocation permit by the Division of Wildlife. The Division has stated that it will not issue a permit for a intra-county relocation unless the Board of County Commissioners has approved the same. 2000-2017 Mr. and Mrs.Neal Lindsey, Letter July 26, 2000 Page 2. Any request for approval of relocation of prairie dogs will be considered upon its merits. A:; I stated above, the Board of County Commissioners has not considered any request for intra- county or inter-county relocations for prairie dogs since July 13, 1999. The Board has no other cases for relocation pending. If you have questions concerning this letter or the enclosed, please feel free to call me a t (970) 356-4000, extension 4390. Sincerely, Bruce T. O. Box 758 Greeley, CO 80632 Dear Barbara , I am greatly agitated at the reaction of many in cur county to the simple request to move some colonies of black tailed prairie dogs to private land, or perhaps on some safe state a»c . If it involved a big tax outlay, I could understand the feei .na. I might understand the feelings of people in any area who have prairie dogs on their land and want to be shed of them. Private landowners have the right to decimate the prairie dogs. The people who enjoy watching the black tailed prairie dociF working in their colonies , building their homes, caring for their young are the ones who could enjoy seeing colonies in a safe spct away from hate filled persons. We have found our grand.childr•ern , visitors from out-of-state, who have laughed with joy at the antics of the prairie dogs when watched from a car parked along the bits of land in town where the dogs can be themselves in their own area. It is especially amusing to me to cast the prairie dogs along side the Native Americans---who, a hundred years ago were so hated that the cry was something like "no Indian is a goo Indian. " The Native Americans were here in this their land before we Anglos began encroaching. The prairie dogs have beer here possibly longer than the Native peoples. Just who has rights? I truly regret the "death sentence" pronounced from our county commission regarding prairie dogs. Just how and where all this decimation going to be done? Meanwhile might it not 1 < inherently right to let a group move some colonies--have that many gone to a safe haven? Box 758 Greeley, Colorado 80632 Gentlemen and Madam: Enclosed is a flyer that was in my door this morning when I went out to get the paper. I was going to throw it away, but after thinking about it, I decided to write you to voice my concern -- not only about the prairie dog, but about various species which are disappearing from the earth at a frightening pace. The prairie dog has always been a part of the landscape of the west, and due to encroachment by man, its habitat keeps shrinking. Surely there must be some solution short of eradicating these poor creatures. I would think that the developers who want to take the prairie dogs' home could come up with enough money to find a suitable place to relocate them rather than eradicate them. Box 758 Greeley, CO 80632 Dear Ms. Kirktneyer, I am writing you to enlist your aid in helping us to convince the other Weld County Commissioners that there are options other than poisoning black-tailed prairie dogs in such a way that:they may suffer for up to three days before dying. The Colorado Division of Wildlife owns a land area within Weld County known as Banner Lakes. With the approval of the Weld County Commissioners,I am told that the Banner Lakes area is willing to receive relocated prairie dogs from within Weld County that would otherwise be poisoned or bulldozed due to construction. I could not believe the Weld County Commissioners would not even grant a hearing regarding this matter. It seems that you all have completely closed your minds to this possibility. I am told that on June 6th you stated, "There is no compromise, no solution. Front Range prairie dogs must die." As a voter I am outraged by this statement and will remember it when I go to the polls. If you will not help us in our struggle to save these little lives, please do not stand in our way. Your influence could save these animals that are a keystone species in Colorado, benefiting numerous other species in our ecosysterr Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely', Lisa E.
