DeCarolis, Ph.D. NHTSA, Regional Administrator May 2001 July 25 Commissioners agenda item - Seat Belt Usage Award Mike Geile - Introduction: In June of 2000, Weld County Safety and Wellness Committee members surveyed seatbelt usage at several county buildings as employees arrived or departed. Then they began a campaign to increase seatbelt awareness. To improve visibility of the existing county seatbelt policy, they convinced the county commissioners to restate the rule in the Personnel Handbook. The committee published articles in the County Line employees' newsletter about the importance of wearing seatbelts. They hung posters to advertise their cause and organized a pledge card drive so that employees could win prizes by promising to always wear seatbelts themselves and to insist that their passengers always buckle up. A second seatbelt usage count was conducted in the Fall of 2000, and committee members reported seatbelt usage increased in every department surveyed. In two county buildings, the Centennial Center and the Health and Planning Building, seatbelt usage was 85% or better during both counts. The Safety and Wellness Committee submitted this information to the Colorado Highway Safety Office, and today we have Dave Jessup and Bill Watada, representing the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, with us to present the award. Mike Geile - Conclusion Thank you very much. The effort to promote seat belt use is continuing and the Safety and Wellness Committee will be doing seat belt observations again this summer.
