Dear Weld County Commissioners, °Na /
As you are already aware, from previous hearings and from our public
meeting at the Convair Restaurant with John Martin, the homeowners of Erie
Airpark are consistently opposed to any expansion of the present Colorado
Land Fill and opposed to any new land fill which may be proposed near the
town of Erie.
The more drastic reasons for our opposition include the following:
1) Supervision is not adequate for the amount of disposal activity
to insure that materials dumped at the site are allowable under
the Colorado State Health Department Standards;
2) Seepage and run-off is being allowed to run toward Clear Creek with
possible contamination of underground water and downstream water;
3) Birds are becoming more numerous near the site and are causing
great concern for aircraft operators in the vicinity of Tri County
Airport;
4) Tri County Airport and the original town of Erie (with its homes
and businesses) are within l'k miles of the dump site, (5,000-7,000
feet -- reasonably within walking distance) . The proximity to a
possible "hazardous waste site", contaminated water and a degrading
eyesore are bound to affect property values and quality of life.
5) Traffic, in excess of 200-250 units a day, are causing constant
dust, noise and safety hazards for residences who live along the
accesss routes. There have been numerous incidents of wreckless

and careless driving, speeding and a definate disregard for other
motorists by the truck drivers along these accesss routes;
6) The "land fill" was to service Weld County, but after a careful
survey, it should be brought to your attention that in excess of
90% of the users are from areas other than Weld County;
7) Weld County is taxing the land fill operators, but has not attempted
to patrol the roads nor adequately inspect and regulate what is being
dumped on the site; and
8) Mr. Robert Frost, the representative from the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration, who operates the air quality research
tower has indicated that the success of their program is in jeoprody
with the air pollutants caused by the dump and the traffic.
Please consider this a formal plea from the Erie Airpark Homeowner's
Association and on behalf of the residents in and near Erie, to deny the request
for expansion of this dump and for any other proposed land fill site in close
proximity to a city, town or subdivision.
Sinc rely,
Edward Lewis
