Re: Improvement Request for Weld County Road (WCR) 7 from WCR 48
to State Highway 60 and WCR 48 from WCR 7 to Interstate 25
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Kiehn:
Thank you for you letter dated October 11, 2001, to Commissioner Glenn Vaad requesting
improvements be made to the referenced roadway segments.
I have referred your request to the Weld County Public Works Department for review. The
Department does not have current traffic counts on these roadways. New counts will be acquired
within the next several weeks.
Current traffic counts are necessary for determining whether a roadway should be considered for
an improvement project. If the volume of traffic on a roadway consistently exceeds 200 vehicles
per day, it will be placed on a list of similar roadways that will be evaluated annually. From that
evaluation process, the Public Works Department will make recommendations to the Board of
County Commissioners for projects to be included in its 5-Year Roadway Improvement Plan.
I think it is appropriate to note that Weld County has a listing of roadways that require improvement
or upgrades which far exceed its current fiscal capability. Rest assured your roadways will be
evaluated based on their comparative merits with others on the list.
I have instructed the Public Works Director to advise you of the counts when they are completed.
Sincerely,
BOARD OF COUNTY.COMMISSIONERS

Dear Mr.Vaad:
What are your plans for county roads 7 and 48? The traffic on these roads has increased
considerably since the opening of the Johnstown Gateway Center.
We have unofficially heard that the traffic count warrants paving them. We definitely
need something done to control the dust! I am enclosing some pictures of the dusty
conditions around our homes.
We know that you advocate the use of magnesium chloride for dust control. We are not in
favor of using this because any amount of moisture and the roads are almost impassable.
This magnesium chloride is also very damaging to vehicles. Larimer County uses a"chip and
seal"method, which is more effective than just the magnesium chloride.
We are asking that county road 48(west of 1-25)to road 7 be paved and that road 7 be paved
from road 48 north 1 mile to highway 60. This would certainly alleviate the unhealthy
environment that exists now. We need some relief as soon as possible.
We anxiously await your reply.
Thank you,
Dale an nna Kiehn
