HomeMy WebLinkAbout20011863.tiff STATE;-OF COLORADO DIVISION OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT Department of Local Affairs D' OF C I r j : I n He June 27, 2001 /B,6 s I iL Bill Owens Governor Bob Brooks Executive Director Chair, Board of County Commissioners Weld County 1400 N. 17th Ave. Greeley, CO 80631 Dear Chairperson: This past Spring, after the initial 2000 Census data became available, we sent you a letter(dated April 3) encouraging you to review the Census results, and if you felt they were incorrect to challenge them via our Conservation Trust Fund (CTF)population estimates process. We told you, however, that the best beginning point for this review would occur after the block data on housing units and occupancy rate became available. That date is soon arriving, so we wish to remind you of this opportunity and to tell you how to get the data you will need. We expect Summary File 1 (SF1), which contains the housing unit and occupancy rates,to be released next Tuesday, July 3, 2001. SF1 data will be available on the Census Bureau's American Fact Finder web site at http://factfinder.census.gov at that time. In addition to being able to obtain the data from this site, we intend to process the data ourselves and to make them available to those who have difficulty retrieving the data via the Census Bureau web site. If you would like data for every block in your jurisdiction, it may be faster to request it from the Demography Section than to download each block individually from the Census Bureau web site. If you would like to receive the data from us please forward to us your web address so we can send the file to you electronically. If you have concerns regarding your 2000 Census Population Count and have not already contacted Ken Ellwanger at 303-866-3167 or ken.ellwangerna,state.co.us please do so as soon as possible. The sooner we receive your challenge, the sooner we will be able to incorporate any changes into our estimates for counties, municipalities and CTF special districts. 7 r Ell w .ger '/rill be &.ding with two different time framLc your pcpc_8?r/. c un ; nos, First,we have enclosed our"preliminary" estimates of the pepa aiievu and households for April 1,2000,which are the 2000 Census results. Counties, municipalities (and CTF special districts) will have until September 8,2001 to file a challenge to these numbers. We will review each challenge and work with you to agree on any changes that we can by October 15, 2001. These deadlines, unfortunately, are fairly tight; they are necessary for us to meet the deadlines established for the distribution of lottery monies. CC/7.5e'774- o ncia_ 2001-1863 7-9- c j . A2, cs 1313 Sherman Street, Room 521, Denver,Colorado 80203 (303)866-2156 FAX(303)866-4819 TDD(303)866-5300 The second time frame is one established by the Census Bureau. The Census Bureau's Count Question Resolution (CQR)program will begin with the release of SF1 files for Colorado and end no later than September 30, 2003. Counties and municipalities may challenge their census counts based on boundary corrections, geocoding corrections and/or coverage corrections (missed housing units). Although the deadline for this challenge process is well into the future, the sooner challenges are filed and documented, the sooner any corrections approved by the Census Bureau will positively affect your jurisdiction. If for any reason you are unable to complete your review to meet the CTF September 8, 2001 deadline, we hope you will not abandon your interest or your efforts to do so. Whenever it is possible to make these numbers better is always timely and important to us, even if it is not until next winter. The 2000 Census numbers will be the basis of our work throughout the decade, so, at least for the next ten years, it is never too late to improve on their accuracy.
