RAMP METERING EXTENDED
ON DENVER'S INTERSTATE 25
It's time.
Ramp metering, the red/green signal system used to monitor Denver's
Interstate 25 and 225 on-ramps weekday mornings, goes to afternoon use
Tuesday at two locations.
Five northbound I-25 ramp locations began operation in 1981 , and since
January five new locations have been operating. On September 4, the north-
bound on-ramps to I-25 at Orchard and Belleview Ave. interchanges will be
activated during afternoon peak periods.
"Peak period" replaces the term "rush hour" ,since motorists caught in
heavy traffic seldom get an opportunity to rush and the period for heavy
traffic or congestion often lasts longer than sixty minutes. Hopefully, after-
noon use at the I-25 Orchard and Belleview Ave. ramps will help remedy the
recurrent stop-and-go-traffic conditions near the interchanges.
Within two years, three new locations should help the mainline I-25
traffic even more. Ramp metering is scheduled for a redesigned Arapahoe Road
interchange; at an East Dry Creek Road interchange, to be built by developers;
and at County Line Road.
In previous use the ramp metering system has reduced freeway delay, in-
creased the volume of traffic using freeways during peak periods, and reduced
the number of traffic accidents.
